Group Communication in Fast and Furious 7

The film Fast and Furious seven is successful. It utilizes the modes of group communication to portray ideas to those watching. In the film, the actors make decisions as a team. According to the functional theory, people involved in a cohesive group have a purposeful mode of thinking. The structuration theory explains that when structures are constantly enacted across time, the arrangement of the social relationships of people becomes established, which is evident in the film (Myers). The film has diverse casts that attract almost every demographic group. Letty Ortiz and Mia Toretto are recruited to the group despite them having different backgrounds. The group is also made up of several ethnicities from diverse backgrounds that have a unique perspective on the development of the film.

The group started unsuccessfully and ended up successful. Fast and Furious seven begins with the desire for revenge and a sad atmosphere. There is an action of Paul Walker's death and the working out of Brian's and Mia's home. Deckard is supposed to revenge for the incapacitation of his brother Owen, but as he leaves the hospital, he blows up his brother and the whole building accommodating him. However, the crew only uses the scene like a spectacular stunt. By the end of the movie, the crew makes the car serve as a surface for those trapped in the helicopter missile. The film also employs many captivating techniques that attract most people to watch it (Myers). In the end, the group is successful due to the use of various elements of group communication to ensure cooperation among all the members of the crew.

Reasons the Crew is a Unique Group

The crew is unique as it portrays all the elements of small group communication. There is longevity for the various groups of the film (Myers). Longevity is seen where Dominic and his team left the criminal mercenary. Together, they make to destroy international terrorist Owen Shaw, and they separate. However, Deckard Shaw comes to seek revenge for the destruction of his younger brother. The film also serves as a tribute to Paul Walker. Even when the group goes back to the United States to start their normal lives, Deckard Shaw continues to drag them into more trouble. Additionally, the crew started as a group to steal DVD players. In the Fast and Furious 7, the group works with the Diplomatic Security Service to stop a Somali terrorist from gaining access to a computer. Also, characters who had died in the earlier Fast and Furious movies return to the character.

The group also has cohesion. During an attempt to save Vince's life, when he is hanging off a truck, bleeding from a gun blast, Brian and Mia cooperate. The two communicate to save mia's life by lifting the wheel from him. The film also provides supportive climates as they bring in the issue of family. The franchise delivers its action while showing that there is still love within the crew. After Letty loses her memory, Dom tries to help him regain it. The film also portrays the phases of group development. Through the various troubles the crew goes through, the characters build a bond that is stronger than friendship (Myers). In Fast and Furious 6, the group holds a barbeque together to show that having a meal as a group is fulfilling than having to live on their own in the wealthy exile. The bond continues to grow stronger in the Fast and Furious 8 when the group comes together to hunt the Somalia Computer hacker.

Conflict and Leadership in the Film

Furthermore, there is conflict among the group in the film. It leads to weakening the group (Myers). Deckard Shaw blows up Dom's Mia and Brian's house in his bid to revenge for the incapacitation of his brother. The conflict, however, had occurred earlier when Deckard attacked an FBI agent, Hobbs, and killed one of his group members Han when they were in Tokyo. Dom is recruited by a "ghost" agent who has a mission of rescuing a hacker. He promises to allow Dom to use God's eye to find Deckard. Dom finally brings the team together to hunt for Dom and the computer hacker. Jakande also gets in the way of Dom's mission. The group also breaks up with Brian.

There is also an element of leadership in the film. The aspect makes the groups successful (Myers). In the opening scene, Dom tells Letty that those in leadership like him have so much on their minds as they don't get anywhere free. Hobbs also issues an ultimatum to Deckard to stop attacking his group members. However, Deckard unleashes a grenade and throws it to one of Hobbs's co-workers. Hobbs goes ahead to wrap himself around the group member to protect her from getting injured. It shows the role the leaders have in protecting their groups. Furthermore, Toretto assumes the leadership position. Despite it appearing like coercion, he convinces his sister Mia to tell Brian about her pregnancy. Dom also acts as a leader when he recruits Petty and Mia to be his followers to help in rescuing the computer hacker and getting Deckard Shaw. Dom's team gains power by using the "God's eye" to destroy their enemy. Leadership, therefore, leads to the success of a group.

Elements of Group Communication in Fast and Furious 7

There is also a defensive climate where Mia is coerced by her brother Torreto to confess about her pregnancy to Brian. Despite her objections, she feels threatened to talk to Brian about it. Several other members of the crew also feel threatened when in communication with the others, which leads to weakening the group's bond (Myers). Moreover, there is an element of decision making. It is portrayed when the crew resolves to break up and start their lives. Some go to live with their families. However, they later make a decision to unite to assist Dom in his mission to rescue the computer hacker and tracking Deckard. There is also an element of listening to others where the crew members listen to each other. Letty listens to Dom at the beginning of the movie when he talks about leadership. The crew also listen to one another during their operations.

Conclusion

Conclusively, small group communications have the aim of making the interaction between group members effective. It is supported by the functional and structuration theories, which explain the essence of communication between groups. Small group communication has essential elements such as cohesion, group development, decision making. Fast and Furious 7 portrays all the aspects of communication. The elements make the team successful in achieving their goals and ensuring cohesion between them. However, there is also the issue of conflict in the crew, which weakens the group's bond.
