This particular essay mostly is under the dimension of pathos, say its emotions, the fugitive language used, symbolism and diction. While writing a letter, the author highlights the beautiful feeling in the process of selecting a paper, kind of paper, type of pen we use and the card to write a letter which usually does not happen while drafting mail. This brings in a persuasive argument defending writing a letter in this new age digital world is relevant and has a scope for it.
By citing email drafting and photography as an example under pathos, the author tries to argue saying, "we tend to rewrite the same sentence and paragraphs n number of times editing it again and again which usually does not happen while writing a letter" (EVA DERZIC 805). To maintain accuracy in the process of writing a letter, we think over it again and again and exercise our brain.
"Since it is hard to make changes to handwritten notes, you are more likely to try to get things right from the first time" (EVA DERZIC 805). This activity makes a writer to introspect and recollect memories and imagine about the relation with the recipient and put on paper with a feel-good emotion.
Likewise, in the case of photography, with the advance of photography, we make n number of photographs. The author accepts the fact that it is great to be able to fix mistakes on the computer with more pictures taken, but it is so easy to do so that many people become complacent and slack off in terms of accuracy. "Once upon a time, taking crappy pictures cost a lot of money - you had to buy film and pay to have your pictures developed" (EVA DERZIC 806).
Under pathos, another important example cited is Immediate gratification. "Unlike e-mails and other social media platforms where we get an immediate response, for letters, you simply have to hope that your efforts will be gratified with a response sooner or later" (EVA DERZIC 806). Moreover, this teaches us the importance of patience and suspension of expectation, waiting for a reply from the recipient.
Author's suggestion, in the end, asking the reader to visit a post office or a bookstore conveys us her personal experience in bringing her argument and make others to feel the same emotion about the art of writing a letter.
