Introduction
Engineering ethics are the moral standards which are set to govern the engineers and help them to apply in the circumstances which rise at the workplace. The set of these moral standards vary based on the discipline which is due at that time. Engineers must follow these ethical standards to ensure services are disseminated appropriately to the employers, the public and according to their profession. Ethics of engineering aid in the identification of the moral issues which might arise to avoid a potential challenge. Also, the past technical or ethical issues help engineers in learning from their successes and failures. Therefore, this paper will focus on engineering ethics and how they are utilized in society.
Engineering Ethics and Technological Change
The development of technology impacts modern society. The advance in technology has led to the unintended consequences which have overshadowed the intended technological outcomes. For example, the development of smartphones, tablet computers, social media, and the self-driving automobiles has positively impacted the society positively. Engineers have to put the ethical considerations at the forefront when designing any technological implement, documentation and ruing the deployment process thus aiding in anticipating and mitigating the negative consequences (Nguyen, 2017). To accomplish this, the team involves representatives from the appropriate organizational stakeholders and people whose focus, education and expertise focus on the exemplary process of evaluation and making decisions.
Engineering Morals in Professional World
The moral engineering issues arise in many cases in the professional world. For example, an expert might use the work of another person which has been published in the diverse market of publication. Also, an individual might use the work of another person which has not been released thus stealing the idea of that person. The engineers who possess appropriate engineering morals they have a sense of valuing the life of others. Engineers who observe engineering ethics do not hesitate to agree that they made a mistake since they know the cost of not admitting to the errors they did (Nguyen, 2017). The mistakes can lead to disastrous consequences especially the life or being fired from the workplace.
The Engineering Morals in Education
Academic integrity is among the ethical problems which most colleges encounter. The academic integrity occurs whenever the engineering students tend to cheat through copy-pasting other students work, self-plagiarism or the intentional cheating. Professional morals are learned even if they conflict with different personal ethics. For example, an expert might feel content with the building a product which will be disastrous to the environment but save the lives of people. The ethics codes which apply to engineer aid in ensuring the lives of people are not affected negatively by the actions taken by the engineers. The laws of ethics help a person in re-evaluating their ethics and try to determine if anything harmful to the environment might become dangerous to other persons (Davis, 2017). Therefore, engineering students are required to take the ethical classes so that they can know how to use them in society.
Conclusion
Engineering ethics aid in ensuring that the societal member is respected and their lives are not affected by the activities carried out by the engineers. The products which are designed by the engineers focus on the ethical issues thereby making the society to accept and adopt them. The engineering ethics are applied in the professional world, in colleges and the technological world. Therefore, observing the code of ethics will help in minimizing the disastrous consequences among the societal members and society.
