Introduction
Performing art presents one of the therapies to the soul of human beings. The role of art in the day to day lives of the participants through the audience and performers have a deeply founded role in the lives of the players. While the scope of performing arts is vast, the place of spoken word, music, circus, drama and theatre cannot be downplayed even a bit. The palace of fine arts that allow the performers to live to their respective audience also remains central to the place of arts in the modern as well as the past society. The audience has grown to love and appreciate the creativity aspect of the perfumers; it, not a mean feat to look down upon.
Upon joining college, I had never been a keen follower of plays in any show, save for my love for popular television series. On this particular day, however, I happen to have bumped into the group of students rehearsing for their regional drama and plays competition due in a month's time. The expressions on their faces were so real. The emotional aspect of the plays also made it inviting to follow to the very end. I watched the first episodes of their evolving play and got the whole storyline and plot. The team needed additional players to take up some role that was left vacant by some of the actors. I submitted my request to their patron and got a call-up. This was the start of my art life. Little did I know that I would grow to become one of the thriving players upon which the school drama would revolve around.
After weeks of training and rehearsals, we were ready to participate in the regional drama university contest. The tensed competition attracted a lot of pressure and interest from different institutions, will that hoped to win it. My role as the key character made it a tough choice for me. I had to remember all the words and action, bit by bit. I was determined and eager to deliver with compassion what I had memorized. The nervy moment was devastating for me. Being my first appearance at such an advanced stage-frightened and gave me stage fright. However, I was encouraged by the many rehearsals I had had before the school audience, all that seemed to love what I provided them with. This time it would not be any different, only better.
One thing that I learned from the performance was the need for proper and fluent narration. I got my guts all together and confidence intact. With my narrative fluency, I was sure that messing up on the stage would spell doom for my confidence and my team. I had to stay selective with my words, for instance, since our play was comic drama, I was at liberty to incorporate a bit of slang and easy words that the audience could easily and comfortably identify with. I also realized that the desperation to have everything right on the stage would momentarily lead me to mistake. Therefore, I had to rely on the support of my colleagues, looking them into the eyes created an atmosphere of familiarity and reliability that meant I was cushioned from the scares of the audience.
College drama festivals are a very competitive affair. The atmosphere is so demanding and the development of the props and attires are very expensive. I noticed that unlike other art genres like music and spoken word. The transition from one scene to another sees a beehive of activities that involve the carrying of props by the stage managers from one scene o another. I also noticed that the place of the audience in the drama is crucial. The emergence of the many people to watch our play gave me the courage to do my level best. I did not want to let down any one of them. I was determined to ensure that they got the value for their time and money. The surging number of viewers at the moment we started presenting was an indication of the high stakes involved in the entire show. I had to do my best.
Participating in college drama festivals has improved my social skills. Today I feel less stage fright. I can interact with people freely and is able to engage the professionals boldly and with more focus than before. The challenges I continue to face from the day of my first drama performance is to quickly react to mishaps in the middle of the play. I tend to get confused in making amends within the play, finding myself dragging the playback to its original version. From the experience on the regional drama festivals, I only can to realize that our competitors, particularly the ones that beat us were best in camouflaging their errors by the actors quickly creating a play within a pay to cover up for one or more of their stage error. Art is a creative science that calls for smart thinking and quick adjustment. I have come to leverage on such errors.
