The United States has the most immigrants in the world. I chose this topic because of all developed countries in the West and Europe, the immigrants that settle in the United States assimilate faster than in any other place. The rising numbers of immigrants have caused many arguments among top government officials that have led to the creation of immigration policy. The policy has several debates on culture, but most of them focus on the economy and how the immigrants affect their growth. Individuals that go to this country do so in search of employment, education, and other personal reasons.
The strengths that I experienced in the research include presence of much information about immigration in Canada. Canada is a country full of immigrants hence it made it easier for research. A lot of researches acknowledging immigration in Canada exist.
The weaknesses that I experienced in the research include conflicting information about certain benefits and disadvantages and many government policies advocate for the elimination of immigrants.
Canada is one country that is home to the largest population of immigrants. "In Canada, one in every five individuals is an immigrant" (Duffin, 2019). Many policymakers and citizens have blamed immigration for the slow growth of Canada's economy. They blame the immigrants for a reduction in jobs and the wages of the citizens of America. However, little proof has been provided to show that the economy is negatively affected by the increase of immigrants in the United States. Immigration, however, has both positive and negative impacts on the economy of the United States.
Immigrants offer skilled and experienced employees in the economy of Canada. Immigrants have helped boost the economy that had been declining due to a decline in birth rates by supplying much-needed labor in several sectors. Immigrants increase the demand for goods and services. This helps raise the business sector by increasing customers. It also plays a major role in increasing investments. Immigrants reduce the costs of importing products and services. Immigrants possess different skills that they use to produce goods and services instead of having them imported from other countries.
Immigrants have led to two-thirds of economic growth. They have started investments creating a large percentage of the firms in Canada. Immigrants have helped advance technical and scientific jobs. This is seen in immigrants who possess advanced degrees from different parts of the world.
Immigrants lead to an improvement in the dependency ratio based on age. Canada's population is aging, and with lower birth rates, the working population lowers, and this is risky for the economy. Immigrants help in filling this gap.
Immigrants provide cheap labor that lowers domestic wages. High levels of unemployment lead to competition with domestic workers for job opportunities. Discourages worker effects on the citizens of Canada. The native-born citizens feel as if they are excluded from job opportunities and are discouraged from applying for any vacant positions. Forms a cultural barrier to production and teamwork. The different cultures of each immigrant act as a barrier to teamwork, productivity, and efficient services.
Most policymakers and citizens have negative attitudes toward immigrants. Immigration has both positive and negative impacts. The positive impacts are more than the negative impacts. They range from the provision of cheap labor, an increase in investments, a reduction of financial burdens, and multiculturalism, which creates a development of skills. Canada is a country with many opportunities for economic growth because it welcomes many immigrants from all over the world.
