According to Chen, Y & Chen, S (2016). A standard development organization (SDO) refers to an organization mostly supported by the members. In most cases, it acquires credentials from the American National Standards Institute, a body responsible for designing and monitoring whether standards coincide with the expected needs within the industry. Nonetheless, SDOs are often international organization with branches located in the United States of America organization.
The primary role of a Standard development organization (SDO) is to create and instigate a culture of quality competency in a given market sector. Thus, the main aim of this organization is to escalate the development of product standards in a given market category. It equally works in ensuring that technologies owned by member companies are well documented and deemed safe, translating to them meeting the level of standards required. A single SDO is only responsible for developing a specific standard. However, it may produce several standards based on the interests and missions that are to be realized by the organization. (Jones.,et al. 2018)
There are several standard development organizations. For instance, The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an SDO formed in 1947 located in Geneva, Switzerland. It has its standard cover a wide range of market sectors such as; healthcare, electronics, energy, and many more. Also, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), is another SDO founded in 1947 based in New York City. Its main aim is to ensure the standardization of information technology. ( Klochkov.,et al. 2017) . Lastly, The German Institute of Standardization (DIN) plays a critical role in the standardization of automotive, particularly in electric vehicles. Moreover, it has established an international technical standardization platform hence boosting the economy of Germany
In conclusion, Standard Development Organizations are very crucial in ensuring that the quality of goods and services within a market sector meets the required threshold. Furthermore, the SDOs aide in maintaining the homogeneity of products and services since they design standards that are to be followed by manufacturers.
