Introduction
Psychotherapy deals with assisting people with a wide collection of mental maladjustments and inconveniences regarding enthusiasm. Psychotherapy can help get rid of or control exasperating signs so an individual would be able to thrive and recover. There are numerous counselling models or approaches that a psychotherapy expert can use. I will discuss the ones I am comfortable with, the ones I am not, and, my theoretical orientation.
Approaches I am Comfortable with
Counseling is the key role of a therapist. There are numerous models of counseling, but the ones that I am comfortable with are psychoanalytic theory and cognitive-behavioral theory. Many a time, clients who come for therapy have those events that happened to them in the past especially in their childhood that impacted their lives by changing or led to more events that affected their lives. As a therapist who has such a client, the model that I would use is the psychoanalytic model. Encouraging transference and making the client feel accepted is what I do first. This makes the client not to feel weird around me when exploring her past experiences, helps them gain insight, intellectual awareness, personality reconstruction and resolve what was unresolved. Psychoanalytic theory's consideration is on the neglectful character rather than the insightful character. It depends on the fundamental idea that a person's conduct is conditioned by experiences from his/her past that are held up in the subconscious. While the consideration on sex has decreased over time, talk treatment and psychology still recognize a noteworthy highlight on ones underlying youth experiences. Other therapy clients come for therapy since there are certain feelings and thoughts that make them behave in a particular way. For patients to deduce why emotions and thoughts influence their behaviors, cognitive-behavioral theory model is used.
Approaches I Disagree with
I am in disagreement with the behavioral approach model because first, relational factors and experiences are possible causes of present behavior are not put into consideration. Unlike the psychoanalytic theory, the behavioral approach does not provide any insight. It also only limited to particular aspects of conditions affecting human beings. Personally, I would not use the model because I feel it is somewhat fascistic since it is all about control. I do not support the Gestalt therapy model because when contrasted to other models, it lacks a more defined and strong base theoretically. It also does not involve the phase of diagnosis. The therapy has its focus one an individual's personality and the environment around that person. Someone who is healthy in this perspective is self-aware, that is, past and future do not affect one but rather what is happening at the present. For gestalt therapy to be effective, the therapy should have high knowledge on personal development. There is possibility that a therapist can abuse power this approach has to clients. I feel the focus on present make it limiting hence I would not use or recommend it.
Theoretical Orientation
In psychotherapy, there is a general understanding and standard way wherein most experts approach their work. This practice varies due to different conditions of clients but generally, this preparation involves the therapist/psychologist tuning in, perceiving issues, talking and finally, helping the client to decide those psychological issues. I can confidently say I have a strong theoretical orientation because I have been exposed to many theories and clients with different issues.
Conclusion
Different clients have different developing problems. It is imperative for psychologists to understand what their clients are going through, guide them and provide solutions. For the solutions to be effective there are a number approaches that can be used since there is no one-size-fit for all clients approach. Different psychologists prefer approaches to others. In this paper, I have highlighted the ones I am comfortable using and the ones I disapprove.
