Introduction
A unique personality is special in a world where people strive to conform to certain practices or norms. In the contemporary setting, a formidable fraction of the global citizenry tends to act for acceptance in certain social, economic, or political circles. Essentially, nobody seems comfortable with his or her personality. Uniqueness is a revelation, but to some it presents profound affliction. It is worth noting that humans become conscious of their feelings, thoughts, and sensations as they grow up, meaning that they may be innate but they are not conscious of their existence. For many people, especially in the modern setting, self-recognition and acceptance mark the beginning of authenticity or uniqueness. It is imperative for an individual to embrace their uniqueness and not try to conform to the dictates of the world.
The hunger for uniqueness guides humanity in every aspect and stage of life. It defines the exploration of work, prayer, play, and the much-needed relationships. The search for authenticity is normally quite pronounced among the teens like me. Towards this end, the teens try out new hobbies, friends, jobs, lovers, the living arrangements, locations, and fashion. Being unique usually takes various aspects of life that include but not limited to the degree of commitment to ones career path, faith, family, and community that are consistent with one's self-images. The notion that people should be authentic and not unique leads to entrapment in the sense that one will try to propagate an image that is not their own. In that sense, many people tend to live in ways that please others and not themselves. Authenticity pleases others while it frustrates an individual. It means that an individual who refuses to embrace his or her uniqueness risks living life according to the principles of other or their society while ignoring his or her inner ambitions, dreams, or the true self.
Uniqueness accords an individual the opportunity to approach life with a deep sense of pride and freedom. People, particularly elders and those of advanced age, regard life choices with satisfaction or regret based largely on authenticity or uniqueness towards attaining the objectives set earlier in life. Notably, people have different ambitions and abilities in life. It means that diversity in terms of personalities, career opportunities, and places of dwelling is natural occurrence. There is no shame in being different from the others. For example, students have varying interests, ambitions, and capabilities and academic prowess, and that is why the careers are different based on the aforementioned parameters. A student that has the dream of becoming a teacher or an engineer should do so without necessarily following the crowd. The secret is to avoid going with the flow or to shun negative peer pressure.
Uniqueness or being unique is a pre-requisite for mental health. Being unique has direct correlation with different aspects of psychological well-being that includes self-esteem, vitality, and coping skills. Behaving in accordance with ones core self, otherwise known as self-determination, is essentially one of the high-ranking psychological needs that move in tandem with sense of relatedness and competence. In this regard, people who embrace their unique personalities tend to be competent in whatever they do and have high regard for the welfare of the other people in their lives.
Increasingly, the current culture tends to mock the idea that there is anything true or solid about being and maintaining self. The evidence that points to that is the increment in cosmetic surgery, perpetual makeovers, and the rampant advocacy for and the subsequent adoption of psycho-pharmaceuticals. The mentioned pieces of evidence tend to favor the mutable ideal over the real or the genuine behavior. Most social media profiles contain wishful identities of people bent on running away from self and their unique appearances. In the most bizarre or magnified sphere, people that include students and athletes depend on steroids, doping, and stimulants to transform their abilities and capabilities in various fields of performance. Additionally, fabricate memoirs have higher market potential than the genuine ones. In essence, the notable clutter of counterfeits makes it difficult for anybody to assert their unique, genuine self. The world is deeply in bed with imposed personalities while gradually and systematically failing to appreciate unique qualities and capabilities that may not be similar or the same. Despite the identified developments, still being unique or authentic has its valuable place in life.
Conclusion
Being unique does not mean being peculiar or weird. It means being different and embracing the different qualities that define one as an individual. Therefore, the most significant step is to evaluate ones strengths and weaknesses and to work relentlessly towards self-improvement without necessarily embracing the traits or the behavior that the masses find acceptable or palatable. An individual should celebrate their successes and acknowledge their failures without resorting to blame or denial. Uniqueness has strong correlation with one's behavior. The secret is to ensure that one acts in accordance or in ways that area congruent his or her needs and values, even at the risk of criticism or rejection. Finally, uniqueness is essential for the cultivation and the maintenance of intimacy since relationship usually depends on honesty and openness.
