Introduction
Female suicide bombers of the second Palestinian intifada have attracted international attention with many people, including the western feminist attempting to explain the reasons why Palestinian women bomb themselves. Most of these western feminist claim that women suicide bombers pose a problem to the Orientalist perspective where Muslim and Arabic women bodies are seen as passive and demure. In the article, the author looked at the work of three western writers and critiqued these writers claim that the female suicide bombers are as a result of bad cultural practices that demean them. To the contrary, the author, claims that suicide is because Palestinian women are victims of occupation and war. This paper reviews the various aspect of these female suicide bomber problem.
In the article, there are several interlocking aspects of the society that the author identifies in western feminist writers about the problem. These aspects include the events, the object, people, law and the community. The main object of focus in the article is western writers' misconception about the Palestinian society culture concerning the position of women and its connection to female suicide bombers cases seen in the society. Most western writers believe that the cultural position of women among in the Arabic and Islamic society forces women to use suicide bombers as a way of fighting for their rights. This is because, as those writers claim, Palestine women occupy a lesser position in the society than animals. These women are often mistreated through rape among many other dehumanizing practices done as a result of culture. As a result, these women find it better to secure their position of honor through suicide bombing because the culture does not recognize their position in society. As a result, the author opted to focus on the issue on an attempt to correct western writers' misconception and assumptions that Palestinian culture oppresses women to the extent that some of them prefer to commit suicide.
The author addresses several assumptions that must be changed to effectively understand the issue of female suicide bombers in the society. First, she noted that there is a mistranslation of gender-related terms from the Arabic language to the English language. These mistranslations have caused a deeper problem regarding the understanding of the female suicide bombers problem in Palestine. For example, translation of the Arabic term sati to "death by culture" remove women suicide bombers from the underlying political and historical context and exclusively places on the cultural context. In this case, culture is opposed to politics and, therefore, considered "essential," "natural," "organic," and therefore static. From this cultural context perspective and violent political act by women is seen to be caused by abusive patriarchal Arab culture. The author, also point out most of these writers are not Palestinians, and they have never lived for even a single day under occupation yet they seem to "know" more than the Palestinian women themselves. It is clear that these writers are have been blinded and deafen by their racist and imperial discourse to the extent that they only focus on culture. Lastly, the author, claims that most of the information used by these writers cannot be validated because they are based on fictional narratives that create a sensational story about each woman who commits suicide.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is clear that the author was attempting to connect female suicide bombers to the immediate reason from the perspective of these women. According to the author, Palestinian women are victims of Israelis occupation and the resulting political events that force them to become suicide bombers. As a result, the issue of culture is the reason behind the female suicide bombers is a result of misconception, assumptions and racism and, therefore, invalid.
