Introduction
A leader is anyone who is in a position to influence different individuals towards attaining a particular goal (Northouse, 2019). And the act of doing so is known as leadership. To be a leader, one has to be humble, accountable, have a vision, full of positivity, and, most importantly, they must be able to influence people. Mark Zuckerberg, the original owner of Facebook, portrays these qualities, thus making him a great leader. Zuckerberg was born on 14th May 1984 in White Plains, New York in a family where members were well educated (Clinebell, 2014). Mark, the internet entrepreneur, developed his passion for computer programming at a tender age. It made his father employ a private tutor to teach him, thus making him enroll for a graduate-level course in software development before finishing his high school education. Zuckerberg spent a lot of his time making software programs while he was a teenager. He made "ZuckNet," which assisted mainly in connecting the computers used in his father's workplace including the ones in their house. Later on, he proceeded to Harvard to pursue computer science and psychology.
He revolutionized social media. He started Facebook while at Harvard, in one of the dormitories that he used to stay in, and went ahead to expand it (Deng, Flynn, Wiseman, Cahill, & Zuckerberg, 2015). Mark's leadership skills and entrepreneurial capabilities are what has made Facebook today to be the most known and frequently used social site worldwide. From him, I have learned that it is vital to believe in your idea. Having faith in what you do is the first step of being successful and a good leader simultaneously because if you do not have trust in what you deliver, then no one else will. When Facebook started, Mark Zuckerberg and his friends were controlling it from a dormitory. One of his partners' known as Estevez, thus suggested that they should put ads to garner more money, but Mark refused as he claimed he wanted it to gain popularity first (Deng et al., 2015). That contributed significantly to the first success of Facebook.
Secondly, I learned that it is essential to give everything to succeed. Mark Zuckerberg put on a lot of hard work on his Facebook project that no one would ever have done. Immediately Facebook started getting popular, Mark dropped out of Harvard as he realized that he would need much time to make his venture bigger, and that would not be possible if he was still in the university. From him, I can see that aiming big is excellent (Northouse, 2019). His venture begun as a connection site only meant for students from Harvard; it was later on introduced to other colleges. Before we knew it, it was a social network site on the internet, and in less than a year, it had garner more than one million users. To expand the social networking world, Zuckerberg had to buy other big apps such as WhatsApp and Instagram.
From Mark Zuckerberg, I can learn that it is essential to stay focused on your dreams or venture despite the challenges that might come along. He was accused on several occasions and lawsuits filed against him, but that did not stop him from aiming at making the most prominent social networking site that will connect everyone in the world. He was offered billion dollars by yahoo, but he did not fall for it and instead, he believed that his team would come up with something great despite the risk factors that were involved (Clinebell, 2014). Thus, I learned to stay focused on my goals just as he did. Besides, I also managed to learn how he dedicates his time on mastering one particular skill yearly. For example, he spent a whole year learning Mandarin. It is an exciting quality that I got to know of; just in one year, one can achieve more in one skill. Another thing that I got from Mark is that an individual should be next to his best brains. In all levels of Marks' life, he surrounded himself with the most intelligent people who helped him boost his confidence apart from the various accomplishments that they achieved together.
In my opinion, Mark Zuckerberg became a great leader because he is encouraging and aggressive. He likes debates and being challenged. Furthermore, Zuckerberg assigns all his employees to work and demand them to finish up then later ask for feedback from everyone, which can be described as a transformational type of leadership. Mark does not assign duties based on age or experiences; he instead appreciates every employees' ideas. Additionally, Mark is fearless and has legitimacy as he used his thoughts and skills to build an empire. He also does not mind if his employees agree with his opinions or not as he has the courage and intelligence required to see how he backs up his thoughts. All these made him a great leader.
Conclusion
The above mentioned is important to me personally, as I am an upcoming entrepreneur. Mark Zuckerberg has given me the reasons to push myself beyond limits. There are times I feel like giving up since everything does not go as planned but through his leadership style, I have mastered the art of controlling such situations without interfering with my goal. With this, I see myself growing big in terms of my career as a young entrepreneur. When it comes to having friends, I now know who to give much of my time and who not to, as he benefited most from his brainy friends.
