Introduction
One of the major issues, in this case, is the treaty. Ruritania and Mussia have had treaty disputes for a long period. Therefore, in signing the agreement, the Ruritania president was blackmailed over his involvement with the drug smugglers in his political career. This blackmail made him sign the deal on behalf of his country. In international law, territorial disputes are of great concerns as they affect the citizens of both countries. In signing a treaty, international law should be involved to ensure that both parties are in agreement over the central issue of concern. Moreover, rules regarding the convention must be set by both the parties to ensure that the process is just.
The other issue is not involving the state while signing the treaty. The citizens are the most important individuals in a state. Thus, they must be involved in all the undertakings of the government which the president of Mussia and Ruritania did not consider while signing the treaty. It is essential to involve other parties when signing a territorial treaty since it is of national concern as it is related to the fundamental rights of the two states, international peace, and sovereignty. Furthermore, there is no way in which the territorial disputes are separated from the international law as it mainly aims at state borders.
In resolving the issue of territorial disputes among the two states, both the parties need to have a defined territory, government, permanent population, and capacity if having relations with other nations. Therefore, for the case of these two countries, the international Court Justice will find the country which does not have the above characteristics. Also, one should not be blackmailed to sign a treaty as it is a mutual agreement between two nations.
The military conflict also followed the signing of the treaty. Border settlement is essential in offering security governance which needs precondition of diverting military expenditure from defending the disputed border to social and economic development. In this case, Mussia already sent its military to the border which hindered the peace of Ruritania's citizens. Thus, in resolving this dispute, the army sent to the borders should be recalled and the issue is left for the International Court Justice.
The best way of resolving the territorial disputes that exist among Mussians and Ruritanian is through creative diplomacy. Policymakers should be deployed by international law, and they should be able to appreciate the strategic significance of the two areas. Resources rich in the border between the two areas should also be recognized to ensure that the citizens of the two states benefit from the treaty. Through diplomacy, the two nations will reach an agreement on where the borders should be, and this will promote international peace among the two nations and ensure that they relate well even in doing other businesses.
Conclusion
In conclusion, territorial is an essential issue in international law as it is linked to the fundamental rights of citizens and sovereignty. The international law also works towards enhancing international peace and this can only be achieved by resolving the territorial disputes. In the case of Ruritania and Mussia, the president of Ruritania was blackmailed in signing the treaty, and this made him not to involve anyone from his country. Furthermore, diplomacy is the best way of resolving territorial disputes.
