Introduction
Football is a competitive physical activity between two teams of eleven players played using a spherical ball. It is commonly known as soccer and currently holds a record of being played by more than 250 million players and approximately in over 200 countries. Football is played in a pitch, a rectangular shaped field with a goal post at the two shorter sides, with the main objective of the game being to score the ball into the opponent's goal (Duke & Crolley, 2014).
History holds it that football was first recognized universally in the mid-19th century in England even though according to FIFA which happens to be the highest governing body Chinese competitive game cuju was the earliest form of football. Modern football thus can be traced back to 1863 when the football association in England formed rules to govern the game. A set of rules, for example, governs football; players except for the goalkeeper within the penalty are not supposed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play, the team that scores most goals by the end of the match wins the game, among others (Dunning & Curry, 2015). The paper will, therefore, focus on the importance of football as one of the games played globally.
Football has been seen as a form of entertainment for over a century now, with most countries if not all engaging in this game as a form of competition. In the recent times, various tournaments have been put in place, an example being the Laliga and the English premier league, to provide a ground for competition between teams and has so far proven to be a great source of entertainment (Emmonds et al. 2017). This is evident by the number of fans across the globe who follow every game in the competition. Players participating in these games have also found a way of earning themselves livelihood. Football has provided an open ground not only players but also for the referees, field marshals, coaches, doctors, among others to earn themselves some livelihood through entertainment. Through this, it has not only contributed to the development of the global economy but also elevated the economic state of some players.
Football has also helped in enhancing peace, love, and unity in the world. This has been achieved by various tournament which brings together people of different races, ethnicity, different social classes, and different continents together as one with one aim of winning a given present. This, in turn, has ensured that the players and fan involved in the competition appraise peace and love among themselves. Health benefits have also been noted to arise due to football. Professionals in the field of health have noted that those who participate in soccer have a healthy life as compared to individuals who do not participate in any game. Soccer as a way of improving and individuals mental and physical state thus being in a healthier position to help deal with day to day infections. It is also to be noted that those who engage in football often have a longer lifespan as compared to those who do not engage in any activity at all.
Football has also been noted to help in building friendship and teamwork among players and staffs involved in a game. It provides a forum for people to meet and through this, it plays a crucial role in helping ensure cohesiveness among people. It is also to be noted that football also helps players develop a sense of work ethics especially if they are in their junior years (Dunning & Curry, 2015). This also comes in handy at a later stage in life even if they do not end up in the football career. It has equally provided a chance for women to reach out and show their skills thus providing them with the ability to feel once again the warmth of being able to be considered. The importance has brought about a lot of changes in the self-esteem of women which is a crucial thing for them. Football has also provided a sense of national identity in the world, for example; Brazil has been known for producing skillful players of all time such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and even the current player; Neymar. Another example is Croatia, from the 2018 world cup been identified as one of the teams who has shown great effort in making it to the finals. Their effort has not only set them in the history of football but has given them a sense of identity in the globe (Zhang & Pitts, 2018).
Conclusion
To conclude, football has provided important things both for individuals and society as a whole. It has brought glory and fame to countries. It has also acted as a source of employment for most of the players, team managers and other key factors within the football domain across the world. Unlike other games, football has many followers globally because of its associated importance.
