Introduction
Immigration has its good side and bad sides. However, if told to choose immigration or no immigration, I will choose immigration. There are several reasons why people immigrate some of which include looking for employment opportunities, to study, to escape wars and to seek asylum among others. Immigration is good for both the origin country and the destination country. In America, immigration is good for the citizens because it brings people with different types of skills that help to build the country. It is good for the immigrants because it helps them get better opportunities, like education that their parents never had. It also gives them the freedom to express their religion, gender, and sexual orientation among others. The immigrants also benefit because when they immigrate to America they get jobs which they use to look after their families (Green, 2014, 12.). Developed countries like the US and the European countries should allow immigration of students because these students take the skills that they have learned and go back to their countries. On returning to their native countries they help to develop those countries. An example of a person who immigrated to the US to study was Barack Obama, the father of the former US president. This shows that if the US had denied him the opportunity to study in the US then Barack Obama would not have been born and it might have taken longer to get a black president in the White House (Jacobs, 2011, n.p.). Immigration is thus an important aspect of society that should not be limited.
Immigration helps a country to get labor. If a country is underpopulated or if there are no people to do certain kinds of work then the immigrants become a source of labor. If the types of work that require are labor-intensive such as construction then it means that there will be a gender imbalance in both countries. In the early days of the US when it was still a British colony, slaves were imported because there were no people to do the work that was needed to build the young country. Today, however, people freely immigrated into America to provide labor (Green, 2014, 73.).
Immigration is important because it helps to protect people who are being persecuted by their governments. This is often the case where the oppressive governments of those countries do not want the opposition leaders who have progressive ideas to be heard. Sometimes persecution is because of the ethnicity of a person. Einstein Albert, for example, immigrated to the US to escape Nazi Germany. His immigration into the US led to the development of the atomic bomb that was used to end the Second World War despite not being involved in the project himself (New York Times, 1964, n.p.).
Some people and leaders like Donald Trump may argue against immigration but immigration is very important to a country whether that country is rich or poor or whether it is politically stable or not. People have been immigrating to other nations before there was even government. A country like the US encourages foreigners to immigrate because of the way they help America. It is correct to conclude that immigration has far more advantages than disadvantages.
