Introduction
The complexity of the healthcare system requires that nursing care delivery is provided in the highest quality manner to ensure better patient outcomes. The system of care is influenced by individual practices and the application of the system-based practice is essential in ensuring patient safety and quality nursing. The system-based practice (SBP) on one of the core competencies identified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to help students and practicing health care providers to understand how patient care is related to the health care system. It also helps understand how the healthcare system can be used to provide improvement in patient care safety and quality (Henriksen et al., 2008).
Nurse Leader
As a nurse leader, it is important to develop strategies to improve the care for patients. In addressing this aspect as a nurse leader in applying the system-based approach I implement inter-professional collaboration to increase the level of clinical experience. Inter-professional collaboration removes the barriers of knowledge among cadres thus enabling discussion on patient management. An increased level of experience is important in building my leadership skills (AL-Dossary, 2017).
According to Henriksen et al. (2008), the SBP principle dictates that the behavior of any system affects the behavior of another. Nursing leadership that I seek to excel in this principle of SBP is ensuring there in place mechanisms for complaints and the way to address them. Also, having in place conflict negotiation and resolution mechanisms will grow me as a leader.
Conclusion
I will ensure the implementation of clinical practice guidelines and carrying out patient care relating to ones’ specialty. Also, I will foster inter-professional collaboration, cost consideration, and carrying out a risk-benefit analysis in the care of the patient or the population. Lastly, as a nurse leader, I will use innovative skills to develop solutions for identified errors in the system (Henriksen et al., 2008).
Using the SBP principle of advocating for quality patient care and an effective health system, I will seek to demonstrate moral courage in advocating for what is right at all time and ensuring emotional intelligence and reflection (Graham et al., 2009; Edmonson, 2010)
