Introduction
The women are the cornerstone of a prosperous and happy society. The death of a woman has enormous ripple effects on the family and the entire community at large. The United States is one of the developed countries in the world where the cases of deaths related to childbirth or pregnancy are increasing. Surprisingly about sixty percent of the maternal death cases are preventable (Morong, Martin, Ware & Robichaux III, 2017). Women in Louisiana are experiencing poorer health as compared to women in other regions of the country.
The increasing cases of the underlying chronic diseases are to blame for the rising mortality in Louisiana. Diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are in the increase in Louisiana as compared to other parts of the country (Morong et al., 2017). Increased bleeding during childbirth also contributes to increased cases of maternal mortality within Louisiana. Most importantly, a significant number of maternal deaths in the region have been caused by escalating violence against women.
Prevention Strategy for Maternal Mortality in Louisiana
One of the major strategies that have been put in place by Louisiana to curb maternal mortality is the establishment of prenatal Quality Collaborative, which would consist of 32 birth facilities within the state (Morong et al., 2017). The collaborative committee would then initiate the Maternal Morbidity program that is mainly concerned with the implementation of practices to address hypertension and excessive bleeding during childbirth. The two are the leading contributors to maternal morbidity within the state. Furthermore, the committee will also focus on the reduction of racial disparities and some causes of death related to the factors. The committee would also expand the provision of Medicaid services, which are aimed at the provision of health care to adults following pregnancy (Morong et al., 2017). The Medicaid services would be vital in addressing the factors that impact maternal well-being outside the hospital setting.
Stakeholders Involved in Addressing the Maternal Mortality
The main stakeholders that would help in the planning, implementation, or evaluation of the intervention strategy include the Louisiana department of health as well as the Collaborative committee. The Louisiana Department of Health would help in addressing the problem through launching the Reduction of Maternity Reduction Initiative that would help in solving the various cases of maternal death caused by excessive loss of blood during childbirth (Morong et al., 2017). The committee could also help in the implementation of mechanisms to address hypertension among expectant mothers, which is one of the most apparent causes of maternal deaths within Louisiana.
The Louisiana Health Department would also help in the implementation of Act 497 of 2018 Legal session, which provides for the establishment of Healthy Moms and babies' advisory council which is comprised of several stakeholders and experts who are capable and committed to addressing ethical and racial disparities within the maternal health sector (Morong et al., 2017). The committee would also help in the prevention of maternal mortality and morbidity through the promotion of effective, equitable, and safe health care to families and the state. The committee would also help in building a robust process of data collection and review that would help in the implementation of the initiatives that are aimed at improvement in the quality of healthcare provision.
