Introduction
Every individual's first job while in high school marks an important experience in life. It is through the first job that people acquire the prerequisite skills to deal with life's challenges. A first job teaches one to be independent both financially and emotionally. Consequently, with the freedom of being financially and emotionally independent, discipline is achieved. Discipline is a significant life skill that helps teenagers face adulthood with confidence and security. My first job was as a writer for my high school paper. The job equipped me with life skills that have shaped my academic and professional experiences. It not only equipped me with skills and values to face life's challenges but also improve my writing skills. From this job, my passion for writing has grown with time. I would love to endeavor into professional writing once I am done with my high school studies. Therefore, this job occupies a huge aspect of my life and that of those depending on me to deliver and perform.
The skills acquired during a first-time job develop into valuable experiences that can be used to impress employers in the future. However, the reason I go the job as a writer was out of mandatory commitment rather than willingness. I had been previously performing well in my academic studies but not so much in interaction and extra-curricular activities. Hence, a teacher who happens to be my mentor encouraged me to do something different at the start of the new semester. She strongly suggested that work or volunteer experiences are considered valuable during college applications. Nobody adopts well to change for fear of conforming to new commitments that may end up failing. As a result, I was not very open to the idea of working while in high school because I did not want to get out of my comfort zone. However, the issue was further pressed by my parents who suggested that it was high time I started earning a few money of my own. According to my parents, I was over-reliant on them, and they expected that I start being responsible. Due to the constant aggravation from my teacher and parents, I decided to get a job finally but one I would be comfortable doing. Given this, I resorted to finding a job within my school rather than outside.
Since the school's semester had already long started, most jobs and academic activities had been occupied. The only remaining job was at the school's newspaper, and I decided to apply regardless of my lack of interest in writing. Today, most students are interested in activities that gain them popularity in school or those that develop the academic disciplines they want to partake in college. Therefore, not many people had applied for the writing job, and I was automatically accepted. Due to my lack of interest in the job, I struggled to attend the first few meetings held at the school's paper department. However, with time I maintained a constant schedule that accommodated the job. Contrary to my perceptions, my job as a writer for the school's paper was an interesting one. I was an amateur at the job, having to be my first time as a writer, but I learned the skills quickly as mentored by a senior student. Finally, the job allowed me to have some financial independence and discipline. I did not have to ask my parents for money to buy even the nethermost of things. Through my little allowance, I was able to buy my things and also go out with my friends for movies. Overall, I become responsible for my own time, academic success, and money. Taking up the first job may be intimidating and bloodcurdling, but with time these feelings become nonchalant. Through my job as a writer for the school's paper, I have developed an interest in professional writing. Although I have not perfected my skills, I believe with time and more experience; I will become a better writer.
Conclusion
In conclusion, not all first-time jobs start well. Some start with so many challenges and indisposition. However, with time we get to learn that a job comes along with a lot of independence and discipline. These skills are very useful because I can overcome any challenges I face once out in the real world. Most importantly, I have learned through my first-time job that I can be in control of my life and improve the chances of having a bright career in future.
