Introduction
A country based on based on equality, diversity, and democracy is not likely to thrive (Buchanan, 2017). Buchman claims that the State of Virginia and Jamestown were not for equality and diversity. Before the slaves were let free, the two states did not believe in democracy and the right of every citizen to be an equal member of the United States. The use of American History by Buchman sets the stage for Buchman claim about lack of diversity in the country. According to Buchman's argument, the American political system was not in favor of equality. There was slavery, women were not allowed to vote and a few rich people controlled the economy. He, therefore, wonders when the change started that claimed America was in favor of democracy and equality. The author, however, writes the article putting in mind a time when people were okay with slavery.
When the first settlers established themselves in Jamestown, they did so by conquering the natives to give room to English Christians. The settlers were willing to wipe out the Indians or drive them away to bring in slaves to do the work that the white English settlers would not touch (Buchanan, 2017). Buchman explains that the attitude that the white settlers had towards Indians and African Americans showed the American society was not in favor of democracy and equality. Before people changed and gave everyone equality there was a system that was already in place. The motives and the way of life were already set as soon as the settlers came to America. There was also resistance in many quarters about the change that was proposed to bring equality in the county. People were not willing to give up their slaves and allow them to be free citizens.
The American Democratic system has not worked as well as the western leaders would like people to believe. The world's reliance on the US as a model of government is declining over the years. A country like China does not believe in Democracy but the people have agreed to shove their need for freedom in exchange for economic growth. The Russians have also had also shelved some of their freedoms to attain the pride that they currently have in the world. After the humiliation of Boris Yeltsin, the Russians became willing to deal with an autocrat who has been in power for the last eighteen years. The European Union also claims to be democratic but their actions do not conform to such values. The refusal by the Europeans of African migrates does not conform to democratic values. Most of the countries have also refused to take in refugees from the Middle East to maintain their characters and identity.
Conclusion
Different people come to the United States with their ideologies and beliefs. The people who come to the US often face resistance from the individuals who were already in the country. Groups such as the KKK and other hate groups have been formed in the country over the years ( Buchman, 2017). However, the hate has subsided over the years and people are willing to live side by side. However, there is a call for people to assimilate and act like Americans. Although there are issues with assimilations, the country has been able to overcome the challenges of the melting pot. People have become more enlightened and have understood that diversity and democracy can thrive hand in hand with conflicts.
