Introduction

According to (Longworth, 2010), marriage has undergone a gradual transformation in recent decades. How people perceive marriage is different from traditional marriage. Nowadays people are getting married in order to achieve their emotional or sexual desires and women do not want to have children as they are wary of hard and cyclical economic times as opposed to those who got married in the past where the value of children was constituted to wealth, meaning the father who had so many wives and children was deemed as wealthy.

According to (Coontz, 2008), marriage has since deemed to be a way of ensuring morality in the society as men and women are getting involved in sexual pleasures while they are still in their teenage hood years. Division of labor has changed, nowadays just like the way a man goes to work the woman also does that and the role of a household being done by women that used to be done in the past, that narrative is completely changed. She also says that the involvement of women in the labor market and education has derailed marriages as women now start to feel like they have reached the level of fatherhood in the family, which should not be the case because as the father should be the head of the family at all-time despite the level of education and wealth he has in the household.

The rate of divorce has also been on the rise in recent decades, and it is mainly caused by family feuds and power where women want to overtake the authority that has been bestowed in men. Traditional values may no longer be sufficient to restore the importance of marriage to where it was during conventional times. What we need is to incorporate on present values and integrity that will be the guiding principles to ensure at least there some benefits in the contemporary view on marriage. We need to accept that marriage has evolved from being better to being worse hence these values will need to ensure it restores some of its value like women embarking on their household roles and husbands regaining their official function as it once was in the traditional times. There are two main types of contemporary marriage: Monogamy and Polygamy. Further, there are three types of Polygamy: polyandry, polygyny (getting more wives in the same period), and group marriage.

There are benefits to modern aspects of marriage, and they include: This is the only accepted way of showing commitment and inducing responsibilities to men and women in the life and those who do not embrace marriage they are running away from duties. Modern marriages will help shape our corrupt society through producing more stable families who can instill morals in their children and with stable family this will result in fewer crimes and social vices (Harrell-Bond, 2019). There are monetary benefits of being in marriage since there will be shared responsibilities in the family where everyone will be mandated to do play his role, and no one will be left with the burden of feeding his family. However, we cannot lack some of the demerits of the modern family is that it restricts individual freedoms as the couples will need to stick by each other and instill excellent and moral values to their children.

Conclusion

Modern marriage has gone from being better to being worst in recent decades due to abandoning of our culture and embracing western civilization, and this has subsequently led to increased rates of divorce in our society.
