Introduction
The world needs to move away from fossil fuels such as coal if we really want to control climate change. Coal is a fossil fuel that is burned to produce electricity and heat, it produces gas and diesel fuel when it is liquidified.it is also known and recognized as the largest source of energy that generates electricity worldwide this is due to the fact that it is easily accessible. Coal mining harmfully affects the environment as a whole because the procedure used when extracting it contributes to a high level of destruction to the environment such as climate change, radiation, toxicity, fires, and air pollution.
Moving away from fossil fuel is vital even though the changes affect many individuals economically because they solely depend on the coal industry. In the northern Appalachia, quite a number of people might end up jobless, this is due to the fact that it is a place where the vast majority of coal mines are found. However, this should not slow the process of moving away from fossil fuels because we need to be mindful of the disparate effects such as, climate change which is brought by global warming (Younger, 2004).
As Americans, we have a responsibility of financially supporting those who would lose their livelihood in the pursuit of environmental protection. This can be done by organization campaigning for the government to invest in carbon capture technology which is very expensive and commercial users are unable to afford. This approach can result in coal still being widely used.
Mining has a significant impact on the economic development, therefore, I will vote in favor of a bill that raises all taxes for all Americans if they are going to a substantial unemployment benefit for people who lost their jobs as a result of environmental protection. This is because the proposed Rodgers bill that is, the Act RECLAIM (Revitalizing the Economy of Coal communities by Leveraging local Activities and Investing More) will focus on an existing program which aims at securing old abandoned mines for the sake of public safety and protecting the environment as well. The bill introduced by Rep. Hal Rogers is vital in the economic development because it makes the availability of $1 billion for 5 years in order to develop the old mining areas of Appalachia (Lewis, 1993). The bill will also endorse and encourage economic diversification, job opportunities and other provision for the societies that exclusively depend on coal industries.
The Reclamation Fund is in control of cleaning up excavations that were sealed before 1977 and readdress it to economic development projects in old coal communities that agonizes from environmental effects and the deterioration of job opportunities in coal industries. This development project is expected to be recommended by local officials and scrutinized at the state level thereafter it will be appraised by the Interior Department. Rogers proposal on the economic development and reclamation projects marks the commencement of an optimistic phase in resolving and addressing the undesirable economic effect of leaving coal behind (Maclntyre, 1980). However, the government must make sure that they do not forget the initial objective for this project that is to the moderate risky abandoned coal mine.
Conclusion
Conclusively, Mining harmfully affects the eco-system as a whole and therefore, it is essential to conduct appropriate valuations which can pinpoint this hostile effects at the development stage so that, curative measures can be taken in order to avoid climate change thus, individuals who come from communities that solely depend on coal industry will not end up unemployed.
