Introduction
Gender refers to the differentiated categories of male and female distinguished due their differences in sexuality. They start in a people's lives after birth, and then as they grow, they tend to conform to the pre-established societal behavioral patterns. They are associated with their naming patterns, duties, and responsibilities, their characteristics that shape their personalities, roles they play in their societies as well as types of professions and jobs they take as dictated in workplaces later in their adulthood. It has led to a social kind of stratification and segregation where one gender, the female, gets subordinated in various instances while the male tends to dominate. It is a topic that has elicited a lot of discussion in the world, prompting scholars such as Messner, Doan, and Lorber to study the legal, institutional and social 'rules', respectively, regarding the segregation of gender in the society. (Burrow, Sylvia,6).
Michael Messner in his argument 'becoming 100% upright' states that it is immoral to discriminate people based on their gender. Doan states that people at workplaces are naturally assigned duties based on their gender. Lorber on the other hand, argues that the social perception and gender inclinations affect and dictate the types of duties an individual takes. Since the social norms, values dictated her young age and established order - which is transmitted down through generations, making them get shaped in such a way that their career types in their later lives are in line with such societal norms. Messner tries to explain the legal perspective of gender, whereby he argues and firmly believes that all people are equal and that they should be given equal opportunities. They should also be assigned duties, opportunities and responsibilities to perform based on their character, capacity and motivation unlike the stereotypic reasons of using gender as a qualification on either somebody should do something or not. (Heaney, Emma, 4). Doan cites in his perspective of the institutional stratification and marginalization of gender. He emphasizes that in many practices like law, military, government, engineering and science studies and fields, women are hardly given chances due to the natural perception they are weak and that they are not fit to lead or dominate in the presence of a man. Lorber fronts that the social constructs demarcating the roles of men from those of women while giving privilege to men are the forms of social 'order' and formed the basic 'rules' regarding the boy child versus girl child. My perspective is that all the gender should be balanced in all aspects of everyday activities, and gender should get discriminated and by avoidance of favoritism.
Besides, Messner argues that bringing both genders together in events like sports will help increase their achievements. Also, by creating a group of the female whose skills have been honed and developed, thus showing no observable difference with men. Doan states that in various institutions, the woman has, lately, tried to venture into the fields considered as belonging to men with some considerable success although some degree of male dominance is still notably evident. On the other hand, Lorber cites that the conservative nature of various societies has deep roots. Therefore due to their intensely seated distinction of gender roles, character expectations, traits, dressing modes, responsibilities and expected behaviors passed successively from one generation to another, it has become difficult to change them and adapt to current changes. My point of view is that people should embrace the new trends concerning gender roles to avoid those old modes of conduct where one gender - specifically women - are looked down upon and stereotyped.
Cumulatively, the three scholars, Messner dealing in legal gender issues, Doan dealing institutional gender disparity and Lorber concerned with social problems in gender segregation has fronted various views in different perspectives, with the standard agenda on the 'rules' that regulate gender dispositions. Women have been looked down upon hence the need to reform ourselves and embrace all genders impartially, for the benefit of now and the posterity (Heaney, Emma, 5).
According to sex segregation and regulation based assumptions on the gender roles, there are many views given out by different scholars. Also, unlike people react to this problem with different perspectives, and they either support or do not support this debate of gender roles. The assumptions made on the segregation of different sex in the field of either employment or treatment of people at different places has a lot of debate on the support or the drop out of the gender roles issues. The gender roles are the contributing factors to the segregation on the following support points that I have made on the assumptions concluded about gender. I support them in the next context, first and foremost is on a specific purpose of creating different positions. The men are associated to be protectors while the women are taken to be nurturers. For instance, if today the men and women go against the roles that were assigned by God to us differently the whole society will look to be in a chaotic and messy condition. There are concurrent reasons on why the men are the heads of our families while the women are the supporters of each family. We imagine an instance in our lives when our both legs can decide one day to move forward at once at the same time? Precisely there will be no movement at all since there should be one leg going ahead of the other.
The second support point is on the men and women being biologically different thus the gender roles cannot be abolished. What makes men feel to be protectors is on the end of them being biologically stronger. The women, on the other hand, are taken to be maternal instinct since they are the child- bearers naturally. In the instance of other species, Men are supposed to prove to their women to be more worthy. Thus you get the male peacocks with possession of feathers that are brighter to create an impression on the women. On the studies of today, most men want to take care of women while on the other side the women want to be taken care of by men. Notably, there are exceptions given by the society, as if a boy inspires to be a nurse, nobody automatically denies him since the ball is on his side. The third supportive point is on the fact that gender roles are valued to be important in the society so as for it to work healthily. The women have a significant purpose in making sure that they look attractive to their men and the vice versa for the men. (Smith, Mark C., and Mary C, Kearney, 7). The women are taken to be the ones cleaning, cooking, and looking out for children, but this is not due to some extent since the men are also capable of doing the same since the women can drive and even maintain the cars. A woman is considered and taken to be a flower which should be taken care of by his husband, and the lady should also do the same thing to his husband since they are spouses. It is always confident that when the above role is not handled well, there is a high chance of domestic violence that leads to a weak relationship. For the community to be kept in a good state these all gender roles should be exercised rightfully by both men and women.
The fourth point is on the importance of gender roles to the society. The lack of gender roles in the community will automatically lead to a lot of chaos and confusions. Over many years there have been a lot of advancements as for the women being allowed to go to colleges and learn, but there are some important roles that remain at a constant for instance the motherhood role. The mother is the one to make dinner, care of homestead, and take care of children. The children are expected to help in doing the courses when they grow up, but the man can never clean or even cook. The primary role of the man is going out to look for money that is used in the purchase of food and giving support to the families' responsibilities. The other support point is the identity established by the gender roles. All persons born on earth are always born with specific purposes. The gender roles help in defining the male and the female parts distinctively. The gender roles bring a clear line of tasks on each subgroup of either male or female thus avoiding mix-ups of responsibilities in the society. The gender roles are accountable and helpful since they create a sense of knowing our personalities. The purposes of gender help us also on learning on some lessons thus reduce on the confusion that could have been designed with less knowledge of the roles. We also get to know on our main origins, our relatives, and even on the conduct of the codes and ethics of the community. (Smith, Mark C., and Mary C. Kearney, 6).
Conclusion
The last point is on the gender a role being of its on nature. The men and women have a capability of achieving tasks except for childbirth. Most women were born with the ability to care, nurturing, and being domestically oriented at home. The men on the other side mainly specialize in provision and protection of the family. The above men and women gender roles explain on how the role structure of the community has been for an extended period, but it does not imply that it should be strictly followed since it is flexible nowadays depending on the circumstance. But it is what is felt to be natural as depicted by distinct roles of men and women. In conclusion, the assumptions made on the sex segregation and the regulated based methods on the gender roles are valid since they are well supported by the above proves and facts.
