Introduction
It was during our academic trip where I got completely convinced to shift my career path to become a nurse. I had acquired my degree of business administration from the American University of Nigeria with the hopes of advancing my career as an administrative manager. I then worked as an operations manager for the Federal Ministry of Finance. The purpose of the trip was to make us exposed to various challenges involved in project management. This included budgeting and planning for unforeseen occurrences. During the trip, I found myself closely working with a nurse which accompanied us to the trip. This provided me an opportunity to learn some basic techniques and skills concerning first aid. The head nurse informed me that I was super extraordinary in the manner I was grasping the concepts and further was surprised to note that I never emanated from any of the medical backgrounds. The nurse's remarks rekindled my early dreams of nursing that I thought never came true immediately I found myself pursuing a business course.
Immediately I arrived home from the trip, I found myself wondering if the career path I had chosen before was the right one and whether it would make me any happiness. This made me begin taking an online nursing certificate course. With the hopes of having sufficient exploration of the nursing field, I decided to join a pre-nursing society which gave me a good connection to many experienced professionals in the nursing field who offered me an opportunity of volunteering at a local hospital. This allowed me to interact with nurses and to learn a lot concerning roles that nurses perform in ethical settings. The more experience I gained the more I came to realize that for real nursing was true destiny. This motivated me and made me have a feeling of pursuing nursing as my major.
My burning passion of becoming a nurse since my childhood and the desire to help persons in need of health care, especially the neonatal patients, the encouragement and support I got from nursing professionals and friends are what has ultimately made to shift my career to nursing. Since nursing also has some aspects of management and business, I strongly believe that the knowledge and skills I acquired from my degree of business administration would immensely prove vital to my nursing career. Furthermore, my good communication skills, empathy, problem-solving skills, attention to details and appreciation of cultural diversity would make me fit for the nursing field.
Conclusion
Pursuing my nursing course at Rutgers University would equip me with sufficient knowledge and skills that I will need to execute my duties as a nurse. The university will make an all-round and competent nurse who is can work anywhere on the globe. I hope to be employed as a NICU nurse after my graduation from Rutgers University. This will enable me in exploiting the skills and knowledge I will have gained from the university in ensuring that lives of infants are saved as working with babies was the main reason why I decided to become a nurse. Helping to save lives of babies is something that had been in my dream and the only place I can fulfill it is by pursuing a nursing degree at Rutgers University.
