Remote working is getting increasingly common, especially in the market of technology. With the tech business feeling the touch of a worldwide shortage of skills, introducing remote working both extend the pool of talent that associations can draw from and assist them in building and maintaining their competitive advantage in a particularly competitive market (Mims, 2017). Generally, a virtual team can be defined as a team that consists of members from distinct locations geographically with a common agenda who primarily communicate via means of electronics. With virtual teams becoming more commonplace, this essay will describe the elements, practices, and challenges that Dell company experience by using Virtual team technology.
In 2009, Dell, which is a multinational company that deals with developing, selling, repairing, and supporting computers and its related services and products, developed a "connected workplace," which is a program that allows work flexibility (DeRosa, 2019). The connected workplace program gives its employees a chance to work more with fewer location constraints as it allows them to choose a style of working that satisfies their needs both jobwise and personal (Choudhury et al. 2019). This, in return results, to increase the company's productivity as one can work from anywhere. Remote working is most essential to the values of Dell company and its business model. This is because, with decreased demand in commuting, Dell has had an opportunity to increase its impact globally as they create more team members who are happy.
To be successful, the connected workplace program focuses attention on communication as the main element and practice, as al is onboarding online. Other practices are trust, collaboration, autonomy, and motivation. Dell created a successful team of day one, which is committed primarily in offering support to the newly recruited company employees via email, instant messages, and calls at their first employment stages. This boosts the effectiveness of the program. Also, by utilizing social media platforms, the team members of the company are advocated to share through these platforms about their experiences of working remotely, for example, at @LifeatDell (DeRosa, 2019). As always, there are several reasons why a particular innovation does not work with other companies; in this case, operating a virtual team. Some of the challenges experienced in using virtual teams include the lack of building team relations, the difference in team members' cultural norms, employee isolation, and the unavailability of virtual training for leadership (Lipnack & Stamps, 1999). But, even though challenging, work flexibility is part of the central culture of Dell company, thus easy to deal with. Work flexibility has a mutual benefit to both the company and the team members, besides the positive environmental impact (Rockwell, 2018).
