Introduction
Joplin tornado might have occurred in 2011 with over 158 fatalities and 1000 casualties in the larger Joplin area. However, the catastrophic EF5 tornado affected not only Joplin Missouri which was its epicentre, affected the areas within the 1.6km. One of the key success factors to factor recovery after the Joplin disaster is multi-stakeholder effort.
What Went "Right" in Joplin
After the tornado, the private sectors liaised with the public sectors to enhance recovery. The federal, stayed, and local officials engaged in polycentricity which involved clearing debris to speed up the rebuilding and resumption of commerce (Smith & Sutter, 2013). The public schools were also reopened in record time. on the other hand, the private sectors through the national charities, residents, and business community all-volunteer in emotional support and physical provisions (Osorio, 2015). Unlike other tornados, the response was concerted and there was complete disaster response plan that was put into place (Wendling, 2012). The insurance companies were also prompt in their response. Additionally, people should be encouraged to take insurance policies to get immediate relief in the event of disasters (Langan, Palmer, Christopher & Shagavah, 2017). Finally, the private sector response was coordinated. The private sectors responded by providing a substantial volume of resources to help in the disaster recovery efforts.
Lessons Learned from the Joplin Response That Can Be Appropriate to My Community
While the residents were slow in responding to the radio siren, it is important to note that the Joplin tornado taught the people of Missouri and then united state at large a lesson. For example, people learned that they should be responsive to tornado sirens and colour-coded warning that alerts them of immediate danger (Deal & Pond, 2011). Additionally, the FEMA should increase the funding for weather rations for 90% if the households to help save the lives of the citizens. Additional here should be community safes rooms constructed in areas that are prone to tornados that people at risk could shelter in the event of an imminent danger of a tornado.
