The medical specialists all over the world have become foot soldiers in a fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper analyses how the coronavirus affects the nursing profession. Furthermore, the paper seeks to provide solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Effects of Coronavirus on Nursing

The coronavirus has claimed the lives of thousands globally. Among the people who have died, some of them are nurses. The situation has left a lot of nurses with trauma after witnessing such horrific events. Some of the nurses had never trained or handled such a widespread pandemic that has overwhelmed the medical institutions. Thus, the nursing profession is likely to witness a sharp reduction in student enrollment in nursing school. Some of the nurses who have actively taken part in the fight against the coronavirus might end up resigning (Ford, 2020). Therefore, there is a worrying shortage of nurses that is likely to ensure after the pandemic becomes wholly contained. No one wants to put their lives on the line; hence in the light of the COVID-19 epidemic, many people will avoid the nursing profession. Some nurses have complained that they have had to endure the most dangerous career while working on COVID-19 patients with no proper protective gear.

Additionally, nurses attending to patients with coronavirus has had to cope with traumatizing experiences of seeing so many people die before their eyes. In Italy, nurses had to choose who ought to live or die because of the large number of patients in hospitals. AS a result, most nurses have become so depressed with feeble mental health (United Nations, 2020). The trend is particularly worrying since these are the same nurses who shall continue attending to patients and the community in the future. There is a big possibility that the majority of nurses might end up having poor mental health. The poor mental state might also develop because of overworking (United Nations, 2020). Therefore, it is imperative for the policymakers to quickly come up with measures that ensure all the nurses cope well with their traumatic experiences of COVID-19.

On the brighter side, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced all the governments to spend more on buying new equipment for the hospitals (Lacina, 2020). Thus, the epidemic has necessitated the revolutionary medical services offered. Therefore, after the coronavirus gets contained, the nursing profession shall remain with state of the art medical equipment. As a result, nursing services shall significantly improve. Moreover, most governments worldwide shall embark on the reevaluation of medical training to ensure all the nurses become better prepared for such a pandemic (Devex, 2020). In the end, the nursing profession shall become better equipped and well trained to handle any medical crises that might arise. Furthermore, the nursing profession shall start witnessing increased intensive clinical researches to develop vaccines faster. Also, nurses are beginning to gain respect and support from policymakers, which shall go a long way in improving their profession.

The coronavirus pandemic is going to increase cases of nurses' strikes because of being neglected by the governments. For instance, nurses in Zimbabwe have gone on strike because of the lack of protective gear (United Nations, 2020). The nurses' strike has happened because most of them are scared of contracting the deadly virus and end up transmitting it to their families. Additionally, attack on nurses is another issue that usually lowers their morale, which eventually leads to a strike and poor service delivery.

Mitigating the Adverse Effects of Coronavirus on Nursing

The COVID-19 pandemic has made everybody realize the vital role nurses play in society. Therefore, as a way of mitigating the adverse effects resulting from the COVID-19 epidemic, the policymakers need to; offer reasonable compensation and incentives to all nurses (Ford, 2020). The pay package shall go a long way in compensating the nurses for putting their lives on the line. Nurses also need to get free psychological counseling services after experiencing such a traumatic event. The counseling services shall ensure every nurse continue working while being in good mental health.

Additionally, governments need to organize for the training of nurses so as they equip them better in fighting a pandemic of such magnitude. In addition to that, all nurses need to receive protective gear for protecting them against contracting infectious diseases in hospitals (Lacina, 2020). Lastly, it is crucial to ask nurses to volunteer for emergency cases instead of forcing every individual to work in a medical crisis, as witnessed in China. That shall go a long way in ensuring no nurse quits his/her job after the disaster.

Conclusion

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the deadliest crisis ever witnessed in the world. The epidemic has put a strain on the nurses who have worked tirelessly in fighting the disease. Some of them have developed depression, trauma, and burnout because of overworking in a horrific environment. Therefore, policymakers need to start addressing the plight of nurses since they are the only hope in cases of a medical pandemic. Such of the things that need addressing to help the nurses work effectively is; improvement of medical equipment, provision of protective gear, and better compensation of all the nurses.
