The novel “Crime and Punishment” that is written by Dostoyevsky, he aims at addressing many as well as different themes on his writing. One of the ideas that he figures out is the alienation from society. The character by the name Raskolnikov’s is separated from his community. This is because he sees himself superior that all other people. He uses other people since he is seeing them as tools. He later commits murder, and this leads him to get fully isolated from society. He is pushing the people who are eager to help him since he feels that he is guilty of his action. In the novel, Raskolnikov is the protagonist, and the story is narrated in such a way that the author focuses more on the behavior of this character.
In the first part of the novel, Raskolnikov remains undecided if he can kill the pawn owner. The pawn owner is a character who has been working hand in hand with Raskolnikov. Raskolnikov has been doing all he can get so that he can give some of the goods to this lady who is referred to as being needy as well as greedy. The lady does not pay Raskolnikov in return, but he just ignores him.
That leads Raskolnikov to get the mind of murdering the pawn owner. The reason as to why he decided to take these action was so that he may get the payment that he would use to pay his landlady. The authors point out that Raskolnikov has had a debt for his house and that the landlady had told her that she would report the matte if he would not pay the money. This makes Raskolnikov get upset to this woman and says that it would be better if she were no more since she has not been paying her. This action makes Raskolnikov murder the pawn owner. Generally, Rodya has been selling possessions to a predatory pawnbroker. The pawnbroker is regarded to be an old, cruel and also greedy woman. The character’s name is Alyona.
After Raskolnikov hears the argument that the soldiers are making on the pub, he believes. On the other hand, he pretends that he does not know nor understand anything regarding the arguments. The soldiers are discussing the matter of the murder scene that has been reported on the station. The murder case that they are talking about is that which was carried by Raskolnikov.
The murder of the pawn woman has been the argument. They tend to be finding out who has committed the crime when Raskolnikov comes and finds up that they are talking on the matter. Since Raskolnikov is aware that he is the one who is involved with the murder cases of the said individuals, he then decides to leave. Still, he finds himself engaging himself on the talk with these soldiers, Here, he pretends to be not aware of the scene, and that makes the solders not to get suspicious of him.
The soldiers are talking about this issue when they immediately see Raskolnikov to get alerted if Raskolnikov understands the matter. Besides, they are eager to know whether Raskolnikov has been involved in the murder case or not. The main reason why Raskolnikov pretends that he does not understand what the soldiers are talking about since he is afraid that they may end up arresting him and taking him to jail. Here, Raskolnikov is left with a lot of questions on his mind since he is now afraid of what will happen next.
Raskolnikov has a thought on whether he is going to confess about the issues so that he can rejoin the society or whether he is going to remain quiet and live all alone. Though he feels like admitting about the issue, he as well remains convinced that the case or the murderer issue of the pawnbroker was justified. Raskolnikov realizes that he loves Sonya, and this feeling forces him to confess on the subject so that he be back once again to society.
Raskolnikov relationship with other characters in the novel is doing much to illuminate an understanding of himself as well as his personality. The story depicts out how some of the issues should be taken or treated. One of the main ideas that are addressed in the novel is how individuals should treat poverty.
Conclusion
In the book, poverty has brought many family members together and has also let to encouraging hard work. Some characters like Sonya and Dunya have been used to justify how society can deal with the matter or cases of poverty. The novel has also shown out how the individual can deal with the crimes in the community. The main character Raskolnikov has been used as one of the individuals who had to take an act of revenge as a result of not getting his money from the person he was working with. There is not supposed to be the way of dealing with the crime. Therefore the novel has taught out the disadvantages of revenging the crimes by your own.
