A person can only condone uncomely behavior up to a point. Whereas some people would avoid any confrontation with their aggressor, others would seek some form of restitution. Is it possible for an aggressor to know their time of reckoning is nigh when faced with a person who wants to get even, and can a name turn the tides? The poem, "Life is Fine" by Langston Hughes gives the entire story its structure, a skeleton, for that matter. After reading this passage, the audience has a general idea of what is likely to happen, and can rightly conclude that life is a journey with a lot of problems and challenges, which require resilience. People need to stay optimistic in life because “life must go on”. We need to overcome our misery to reach a higher level in life.
The leading question in this poem derives from this passage since it is clear that the persona wants a pound of flesh from his enemies. The passage gives an idea of what to expect from the persona vis-à-vis his challenges and the problems in life. However, it raises the question as to whether, in normal circumstances, it is possible to realize that we’ve placed the last straw on the camel’s back. In the case of the persona, the narrator is not only clear about his intentions but also makes the reader aware that even though he has nefarious plans, the latter has no idea what is in store for him. He feels as though things will be challenging as they have always been.
If we are to look a little closer at the challenges of the poet, a few things will come to mind. For instance, it appears that the he has been only fortunate up to the time that he encountered life problems, which makes him to contemplate suicide. It also seems his fortunes are about to change to the worse after having been affected by the problems he has encountered in life. Nevertheless, without having read the entire poem, one cannot tell whether this is true or he lives up to his name.
It could be that the narrator of the story goes ahead with his plans and derives pleasure out of sacrificing his life by burning him upon a would-be altar. That is, the narrator succeeds in his plans to get retribution for the wrong things that others did. It could also be that out of sheer luck, as he either learns of the narrator’s plans or evades them, or that karma smiles kindly upon him, and the narrator changes his mind. Either way, maybe resilience held the key to his good luck.
Indeed, a person with a suicidal plan scarcely reveals his intentions to the object of his malice but keeps them well hidden under a veil of normalcy. The question remains as to whether such a person can inadvertently reveal these intentions or even an aggressor can get respite from sheer luck amid all the wrongs they have done. Thus, the antagonism with life is clear in the passage and throughout the story if the reader takes time to read the poem.
Therefore, the author grabs the reader’s attention by showing how it is relatively clear that he is subject to hurtful forms of depression suicide, and resilience. He brings all this psychological issues and implications in his life to the legal agenda by offering reforms that can help victims seek relief or deter hate perpetrators. Instead of focusing more on his personal and psychological issues, which may confuse the reader, the author makes the problem relatable by accompanying it with the social, familial, professional, and psychological devastation associated with hardship in life. The poet has been only fortunate up to the time that he encountered the persona. It also seems his fortunes are about to change to the worse after having crossed paths with the narrator.
Conclusion
The struggle of hardships also means the fight for equal rights and humanity for the people particularly the minority groups. It is also the time when many activists wrote a lot of encouraging works. People need not to stop living their life and instead they should continue struggling in the hands of challenges and problems. The challenges can be a great turning point in our lives especially if we believe in ourselves. To live the best life require a positive mindset and resilience. People cannot achieve anything if they do not believe in themselves. Therefore, the message of the poet is that we should not give up in life since there are many things we do not know and through resilience and hard work, the greatest moment of our lives will come. Life is a journey and we must find some hurdles and difficulties along the way. This is perfectly okay as it is part of life that we need to accept and cherish. Everyone has a greatest gift of life, so live your life because there is no such important blessing like life.
