Leadership is a critical concept and ideology that seeks to give guidance and amicable solutions to very complex problems on our daily surrounding. The concept of leadership, plays a critical part in our daily lives. Leadership may be defined as a calling, which seeks to give justifications and broader understanding of the involved skills (Sousa, & Rocha, 2019). Perhaps the most debatable question to consider in this case, is the true definition and consideration of leadership. However, it is very cumbersome to fine the suitable definition and actual meaning of leadership. However, leadership definition may be assessed through a series of defined common traits that emanates or defines the outstanding performance of a person. Even though not all outstanding performance is related to leadership, the actual traits of leadership are unique and identified in the right people. Among the common traits of leadership, is associated with inspiration. According to (Plaspohl, Marshall, Morris-Hunter, & Manning, 2018), inspiration is defined as the ability to persuade people to support your opinion, or stands, that is positively identified and seeks to instill positive transformation. In this case, it is essential to understand the reality of leadership, and identifying inspiration. On the other hand, leadership is defined on the traits of setting proper direction, which are measurable and achievable for his or her juniors to follow.
On the other hand, leadership plays a critical role in ensuring that motivation is a critical part in ensuring that junior workers follow every direction the leader proposes. Unlike managers, leadership is significantly different from what is understood on the concept of management. Leadership calls for execution of ideas, and concepts, which sets the path that junior workers can do. However, the concept of management is slightly different as it used authoritative concepts to ensure that workers deliver what is expected from them. As a result, most of the people fail to understand that leadership and managerial skills are two distinctive elements. However, leadership, is an artistic interaction and allocation of resources and the current workforce.
According to (Oza, et al., 2018) leadership development refers to an array of activities which are adopted or employed by an individual to improve the ability, skills and confidence of a leader. Leadership development process is essential, especially, when one is introduced in the concepts of leadership, and its planning. The achievement of leadership development is attained through a series of planning, which seeks to prepare a fully intelligent and competent leader, that can handle different dynamic emerging environmental factors. The concept of leadership development aims at preparing leaders in to become competent before they take over senior position, when they are left vacant.
Leadership development is enforced through different programs that are defined by their complexity in styles of teaching and cost. However, mentorship and coaching are the common ways to achieve leadership development. The use of these two concepts bring the leader in his footsteps in understanding the nature of leadership, and the challenges in the sector.
According to (Sousa, & Rocha, 2019), the success of any leadership development is profoundly influenced by the nature and quality of the program. Subsequently, the level of support and acceptance and the learning style of the person being under the development process plays a critical role.
Among one of the essence of leadership development is associated with the increased employment retention. Nearly 32.3% of employees in an organization, are willing to sacrifice and leave their jobs due to bad managerial and leadership skills (Plaspohl, et al., 2018). In this case, poor leadership skills may affect the performance and motivation of workers. However, it is essential to understand that leaders play a critical role in inspiring and directing junior members. As a result, good leadership in an organization improves the retention of employees. Subsequently, this is achieved through critical leadership skills, that should be emulated and reflected upon.
In many cases, people aspiring to become leaders tend to ask themselves, on what they should include in their leadership toolkit for better leadership skills. As a result, it is essential to understand that, leadership is more than a simple managerial task. Leadership calls for several factors, such as humility, persistence, knowledge and understanding of your team. Whereas these handful elements are vital in the leadership tool kit, there are numerous factors that help increase the grip of leadership.
To begin with creating an inspiring vision for the future plays a critical role in the development of leadership skills. Every visionary leader has great sense of understanding the dynamic challenges of his or domain. As a result, vision development and understanding of the entire concept that goes behind the essence of developing visionary inspiration is a critical tool for a leader. According to (Sousa, & Rocha, 2019) leadership requires patience, which may be as a result of treating or going over and over on the same issue until all the junior workers or team members get to conceptualize it. However, without an inspiring vision in leadership, a lot will fall apart. Never the less, it is essential for the leader to have a better and creative vision that will act as a point of reference.
Self-Assessment
Leadership programs play a critical role in ensuring that every leaders is equipped with when preparing a leader. Leadership development is affected by several factors such as the nature of the program and the people being trained for leadership. However, to ensure that a leader is developed to the optimum level and equipped with the right skills, it is essential to understand and formulate the suitable criteria or methods of assessing leadership strength and weaknesses. According to (Plaspohl, et al., 2018), understanding a leader's strength is essential, which gives a better understanding of his or her areas that can be performed better. In this case, a leader understands how he or she performs better. Based on the leadership development program, one can understand the and appreciate the essence of these programs.
On the other hand, understanding weakness of a leader is essential in trying to evaluate the possibilities of shortcomings in the leadership cycle. Subsequently, a leader needs to understand his or her weaknesses to ensure that improving of their shortages are dealt with properly. The essence of determining strength and weaknesses in this case, is used in determining the areas worth reflection for a competent leadership skill. As (Oza, et al., 2018) outlines, many leaders are pulled back by the nature and level of their weaknesses, which are not assessed in advance to help them mitigate and reduce the gap of leadership skills.
According to (Sousa, & Rocha, 2019), the first step in assessing the strength of a leader is associated with identifying and learning the strengths. In this case, the identification of the leadership skills will ensure that strength of a leader is identified and embraced. As a leadership student, I have discovered several leaderships strengths, which include: Self-awareness, excellent communication skills, effective negotiation skills and Conflict resolution skills. These skills have influenced and shaped my leadership abilities in different occasion. On the other hand, I have also developed an array of weaknesses, which have profoundly affected my leadership ability. These sets of weaknesses include extreme trustworthy, and flexibility.
Self-awareness requires a critical understanding of one's ability in identifying the innermost performance and potential that he or she can attain. self-awareness is assessed through the ability of understanding yourself fully as a leader. This will help increase the understanding of weaknesses and strengths developing within an individual. A critical assessment of this skill may be measured through outlining the strengths and weaknesses one has. As a result, this will increase the possibilities of proper understanding the nature and level of self-awareness. As a student and an aspiring leader, I have natured the concept of self-awareness, as fundamental way of ensuring that I understand all possibilities of strength within me. Subsequently, the observation of this strength has help to refine and work on my weaknesses.
