An analysis of census data allows informed decision making, for instance, to fund projects in a particular region. The United States follows a ten years’ frequency census that enables analysis of socioeconomic standing. Such data entails population, income, housing, and education characteristics, among others. The focus of this study is to analyze socioeconomic data in New York City for funding decision making.
New York City has five boroughs that define its neighborhood. The boroughs are seated where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean (Donnelly, 2019). They include Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, State Island, and Manhattan. Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs) are also used to describe the cities’ location. The census blocks are 55 and are usually used as the groups representing the neighborhood (Donnelly, 2019).
New York City has boroughs that coexist with each neighboring county. The census tracts comprise of statistical coverage established by Census Bureau approximated to have at least 4000 residents (Donnelly, 2019). Approximately over 2000 tracts are available in the city. The tracts are notable for being within the counties, and their sum equals the neighborhood for statistical data (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). The below table provides more information about New York City’s socioeconomic exploration.
A summary of the Population Characteristics data is crucial for analysis. As regards the population characteristics, the number of citizens in New York City continues to increase. In the future, the population is still expected to increase due to increased immigration and births. In this regard, a 2.0% growth is likely to occur (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). The analysis shows that the majority of people in New York City are whites and the minority Native Hawaiian, including Pacific Islanders. However, races are more mixed due to intermarriage among the people. Cohesion is witnessed in the city as well. The highest persons in the city are 18 years and below (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). Thus, such figures show the possibility of continued growth in population and productivity.
The per capita in New York City is good for economic growth. The highest number of population lives above the poverty level. The employment rate in the city and business management is therefore high, leading to a decreased number of the poor. A significant number of people live in median housing units in the city. The fact that the poverty level is down has contributed to the affordability of housing. However, it is essential to consider individuals living in poverty, including the homeless in the city. The education level in New York City is high. The analysis shows the availability of education institutions and the capability of the population to afford it. However, the number of individuals with at least a bachelor's degree is 37.4% (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). Therefore, this shows the majority of people do not focus on furthering their education.
Conclusion
The study analyzed socioeconomic data in New York City for making decisions on funding. New York City has an excellent economic might, and the population is medium for any program to succeed. The number of poor is low, and education is high which gives people knowledge to formulate programs. The community is mainly for the young and productive. Therefore, if the U.S. government has to make decisions to fund any project, the best initiative would be that which provides benefits to a given population, such as the young population.
