Introduction

The segment by Ira Flatow explains the effects of floods on many communities that live in flood-prone areas. Floods have been increasing in the many American States leaving several people homeless and counting losses from the damage that is realized after the floods recede. A lot of strategies that are created to deal with the repetitive floods encourage people to leave their homes to settle in better areas that are free from the floods and come back to rebuild after the natural disaster subsides. Climate change can become a crisis when it poses a threat to the people who depend on it for different activities, especially agricultural practices, and to perform specific daily tasks that depend on the climate. Fires burning and water rising in the coasts are a significant climate change menace with many people having different views about how climate issues can be handled (Flatow 1-11). Many of the participants in the segment complain of the way that floods have changed their lives, where they are forced to relocate to safer places as their homes are in danger that emanates from the climate changes. Some of the participants also admit that they would not like to spend their money buying land, which can be flooded at any time of the year; hence they choose to live in rented areas to reduce the losses caused by floods and other climate issues.

Gases That Lead to Climate Change

The principal gases that contribute to climate change include carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases such as Methane, Nitrous Oxide, Hydrofluorocarbon-23, Chlorofluorocarbon-12, and Sulfur Hexafluoride. Carbon dioxide is mainly realized from deforestation and the combustion of fossil fuels (Ward 1-14). Methane is also a gas that emanates from the production of fossil fuels and agriculture. Nitrous Oxide is a gas that is a result of the combustion of fossil fuels and different industrial processes where gases are emitted to the atmosphere.

The other gases, such as Chlorofluorocarbon-12 and Hydrofluorocarbon-23, are emitted from the refrigerant. Sulfur Hexafluoride is issued by the transmission of electricity, while Nitrogen Trifluoride's primary source is the manufacturing of semiconductors, causing a change in the environment and climate (Ward 1-14). These gases interfere with the ozone layer and lead to temperature rises that cause fast evaporations of water. The rapid evaporation of the water leads to the quick accumulation of condensed water in the atmosphere that falls to the earth in the form of rain and storms.

How the Topic Will Help to Reduce Climate Change?

This topic will help to reduce the gases involved in climate change and the effects by discussing different ways that can be used to deal with floods. The greenhouse effects are analyzed in the topic and how the government can use specific strategies to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions (Bostrom, Hayes, and Crosman 805-828). Many gases have been increasing due to human activities such as deforestation and industrialization. The involvement of the government in reducing the effects of deforestation and manufacturing on the topic will help to reduce gas emission, reducing floods in the areas. The issue will also help to estimate the probability of other floods happening in the future and the necessary steps taken to avoid a lot of destruction.

Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint is the total emission of greenhouse gases that are caused by individuals and organizations. The best way to decrease carbon footprint is by ensuring that car tires are fully inflated to reduce fuel consumption (Alphonse et al. 12). Individuals should also cut meat that they consume and reduce their wastage of food. Lighting that is efficient in energy should be adopted instead of incandescent light bulbs. Electronic devices that are not in use should be unplugged to avoid wastage of energy.

Ron DeSantis is the governor of Florida, and he should deal with climate change that is causing severe weather and a rise in sea levels, making it the most critical environmental issue in Florida currently. In the future, it is predicted that a six-foot increase in the levels of seawater will be realized in Florida, and it will cost it the loss of property worth billions of dollars (White 3). One policy that Ron DeSantis should implement to deal with the issue is to create rules that help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and reduce industrialization levels as well as development in areas that are prone to severe weather.

Conclusion

Enough planning can cause communities to have different strategies ahead of natural catastrophes to avoid river floods, and this strategy has been a great way to prevent significant retreats that affect the livelihoods of many people around the states. Hotter temperatures are being realized in many areas as it means faster evaporation of water that leads to more rain and huger storms that happen in a short time and lead to more floods. People should also strive to live in anti-risk areas through planning for flood disasters and potential relocation plans that are required to avoid circumstances that may leave them stranded.
