The objectives of the uniting process that was performed under the "Great Tree of Peace" were based on a pledge by each nation that they could not engage in any war with one another. The sixth nation, Tuscarora, was allowed to be part of the associated in around 1720 (Foner 15). The confederacy affiliates denoted to themselves as the Haudenosaunee, which translated to "People of the Longhouse". These members employed a matriarchically hierarchy with a strong executive that helped in governing themselves and other associate nations.
