Racism must cease in the United States! So many black Americans have suffered in the hands of white Americans in the name of skin color. Racial discrimination against black Africans in America has been a disturbing headache (Robinson 98). The gap between the two races is cited to be wider than ever, causing uproar among all citizens in the world. Racial discrimination in America is presented in the form of an educative movie that depicts the unfair treatment of black Americans in the United States (Ninjas 7). The most touching aspect of racial discrimination is that the members of each race in question possess abilities and characteristics that are distinct, and the qualities distinguish them as superior compared to others. The Americans have an implicit bias through ascribing all crimes to the black Americans. Typically, all theft and wrongs that occur in America are shouldered to black Americans.
The recent death of George Floyd, the African American man, depicted the severity and intensity of racial discrimination in America. After being suspected of purchasing groceries using a forged cheque, Floyd was pinned on the ground by a group of white police officers. One officer was captured on video kneeling on his neck for minutes and gradually suffocated him to death. The incident named above was cited as one of the unmerciful murders committed to unarmed African-American citizens by the American police officers. However, after the video went viral on social media, riots have been witnessed across the United States and, eventually, the whole world. The UN High commissioner, in response, urged the United States authorities to take action to stop similar killings and instill justice when such actions occur. These injustices have prevailed over time despite the calls for justice by authorities, and this is the time to act, and act responsibly now!
In the protest for justice, non-violence is the best approach. Firstly, peaceful protests depict high levels of integrity and love for one another. Secondly, non-violent protests ensure that no one gets harmed in the course of the protests, and ultimately, no property is damaged (Chisholm 21). Considering that Floyd was killed in the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota, I would join the protestors in my area to push for change in the entire nation. The murder of Floyd was a serious racial discrimination act, and therefore, all citizens must participate in the protests to push for changes regarding social justice. I would, therefore, join all citizens, both black and white Americans, in their staged protests. The most satisfying outcome from the injustice done to Floyd is passing life sentence to the four police officers who were involved in the murder. The arrest is not the solution because the suspect can be released through corrupt means (Moyer 3). However, to ensure justice for Floyd and other martyred black Americans, the police officers should serve a lifetime jail term to stop any other possible unjust act on black Americans.
The government seems to be reluctant to address racial discrimination issues. This case is like the situation in the film âHairspray,â where the pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad rallied against racial discrimination by pursuing stardom as a dancer (Alston 11). In the Corny Collins Show, a black girl, Nadine Carver, was cut from competing in the teenage dance show. She was told that there was a âNegro Dayâ organized for the blacks on the last Thursday of each month. Therefore all black Americans were cut off from participating in the Corny Collins Show by the owners of the Amusement Park. The situations are also like in the video âIf a Tree Falls,â where FBI arrested activist Daniel McGowan being suspected as an âenvironmental terrorist.â McGowan tried to avoid a life sentence legally, and the government planned to set an example to the other close-knit groups, although there was no loss of life.
Conclusion
Unlike in âMilk,â where Harvey Milk celebrates his victory as a city supervisor after a series of failed attempts, the racial discrimination in my case presents suffering for the black Americans. In the âMilk,â there is harmony and unity because we see Harvey greeting Sylvester with honor (Faderman 16). Sylvester is a black, openly gay-man diva. On the other hand, the police brutality witnessed during Floydâs murder depicts a wide disparity between racial lines. The other different instance from racial discrimination is in the âIron Jawed Angels,â where the defiant activists took risks in helping women to win the right to vote in America. In the Iron Jawed Angels, the American Womenâs Suffrage had an effective alliance that revolutionized the American feminist movement, and the women were granted the right to vote (Zahniser & Fry 126).
