Introduction

Communication is an essential tool in human life; it involves the transfer of information from one place to another from one person or a group of people to another. For the communication process to be complete, it has to involve the sender, the message being sent, and the recipient (Bodie et al., 2016). Feedback is also part of a complete communication to justify if the message was delivered and received. There are different methods of communication available that take different styles. Supportive communication, for instance, is a style of communication that uses various techniques to pass information and is set to achieve specific goals. This paper discusses the types of messages which represent violations of expectancies in supportive communication.

Firstly it is essential to recognize the intention of supportive communication before determining the type of message which represents violations of expectancies in it. Supportive communication is intended to resolve conflicts between communication parties(High, Solomon,2016). Any time such communications are considered; it is expected to bring positive results. However, that cannot be achieved when several issues are not addressed during the communication process. Supportive communication should focus on the problem which needs to be addressed and the possible solutions to the problem.

In most cases people focus on individuals involved in the problem which end up not coming to the conclusion of the matter. Language use in supportive communication is crucial if the expectations are not to be violated. Descriptive language is more appropriate when trying to solve a problem during conversations. Expressive language does not invoke defensiveness in the parties involved since it does not bring sense judgment. Above all, it is essential to encourage productive dialogue during problem resolving communications; it gives every participant a chance to give his or her side of the story. It is comparative to listen to one side of the story and a corresponding back and forth communication. The type of dialogue suggests to parties that every party is worth hearing and relationships are strengthened as the problem is being addressed.

Several positive and negative expectancy violations are associated with relationship satisfaction and affect improvement as far as supportive communication is concerned. Passing out messages to recipients takes a lot of skills regardless of what form of communication used. How a message is conveyed can bring positive and negative results. First, it is essential to consider supportive communication involves who if it involves employees and managers who have power differential or best friend with equal power. The connection between people of the same power can bring negative expectancy if the message is conveyed in the wrong style. The way friends approach each other is far much different from how other people communicate. The method used also is different; passive communication style, for instance, fails to express feelings fully. A passive communication style often leads to a misunderstanding which is a negative expectancy in any supportive communication. The dispute may also lead to resentment, which is not good among friends or people who are closely related together. It lacks an appropriate connection between people like eye contact and non-verbal cues. It, therefore, does not care for the feelings of others and is mostly discouraged style of communication. Aggressive communication is also another style that is likely to bring negative expectancy in supportive conversation. Aggression in connection brings discomfort to the parties involved. The outcomes of such communications usually are not right. The attack can be in the form of facial expressions, voices, or words themselves if it is verbal. It is the worst style of communication, especially with close people. Other communication styles like assertive and passive-aggressive have a less negative expectation because they express less power. However, they might bring negative expectations since they are typically used to express dissatisfaction.

Communication between people with differences in power sometimes has different outcomes when different styles are used as compared to people with equal authority. Authoritative communication is a time characterized by an aggressive form of communication to confront a specific mistake. The style is mostly believed to bring positive expectancy in supportive discussions unlike in an equal power relationship. Passive communication between employer and manager, for instance, is likely to give negative outlook because there is no connection between the two. The message passed might tend to lose its weight and meaning when conveyed passively. As much as an aggressive style of communication is considered appropriate when confronting people, it violates the expectancies of supportive communication.

In conclusion, messages that represent a violation of expectancies in supportive communication vary between the style of communication and the parties involved. Commonly, messages that lack empathy, respect, and genuineness are considered to have violated the expectancies of supportive communication because it does not empower ethical conduct. Disrespectful words also is a violation of expectancies in any supportive connection. It is essential to address each individual appropriately by recognizing the position of an individual in a society. Aggressive and passive language is also another violation of expectancies in conveying messages. Finally, violations of expectancies in supportive communications occurs differently in different forms and styles of communication s discussed in the paper.
