A few weeks ago, a local television show called Toe Sasaa le Fafao discussed the same problem from the Samoa Victim Support Group's point of view. According to the show, the number of domestic violence cases registered in the group's office is still climbing. They stated that incidents happen not only during the daytime, but also at night, especially from midnight and deep into the night. From the show's perspective, the two major causes are financial problems and alcohol drinking by men. There are numerous confirmed cases of domestic violence, and others continue to emerge, hence worsening this situation in Samoa.

However, Unborn Child portrays an essential message that entails an important wake-up call for everyone, especially men, to stop domestic violence in our country. We all have a purpose for our existence here on earth. Therefore, we should refrain from solving our problems by throwing blows, slaps, hooks, kicks, and even saying defaming and threatening words to someone. What we need to do when we have conflicts is to share our feelings, our thoughts by sitting down and addressing our differences in a peaceful manner. Additionally, in our culture, we all have sisters or ioimata in our families whom we show all the respect they deserve. The question that now arises is why it is hard to do the same thing for someone's sister.

Keeping the Vows: Respecting Intimate Partners

We also need to keep in mind that death is not the only hurtful thing that violence can cause but also the significant impact they leave in children's life. When a mother is abused, the children may feel guilty that they cannot defend her, or that they are the cause of the trouble. They will suffer because they lose their mothers, and they may think that it is okay to use violence as a solution to solving some or every circumstance.

More importantly, we have to respect our intimate partners with all of our hearts. On the eve of marrying, husbands and wives take vows to love each passionately in whatever situation, both in richness and poverty, in health and sickness. To keep such promises, we should love the people in our lives wholeheartedly. Therefore, we must end this horrible issue here in our country to have a peaceful environment and a peaceful Samoa.
