Introduction
I can trace the beginning of my dancing in 1952 but I started dancing with Beryl in the march of dines before the start of the games in California. There was an American who had come to enjoy the Carnival and invited us to join the float in the carnival. I had met Beryl through some mutual friends, but I cannot remember how I had met them. When I approached Beryl, she agreed to do a choreography of a dance we had to do, and I enjoyed very much working with Beryl. Beryl happened to be in the same street during the march of dines, and we used to dance in a literally small thatched roof structure. We performed in Hollywood, New Jersey, and California in different events with Beryl and the others.
When we started to dance with Beryl, it was unusual, and I enjoyed it too much as well as received support from my friends. I used to go dancing two to three times a week because the whole experience was amazing. It was exciting going around dancing with black people, one time I was supposed to go with Beryl to a Shangu meeting, and something happened that I regretted not having gone to an actual shangu meeting especially due to the ritual of casting out spirits. Apart from shangu Beryl and I did Cleo dancing, and she had done a lot of research in the islands and the mainland to see the ubia and shangu which she incorporated in our dance which made it more exciting.
When Beryl was asked to put on a show at the carnival on a Sunday night she asked me to join her, and I was extremely amazed, and I looked forward to the night. I had already told her that I am going to love it. In the dance, there was a lovely tall black handsome dancer who went ahead and married an American dancer who was supposed to pick me up from home. When I got home, I told my stepmother about the idea of dancing at the carnival. My stepmother responded that if it doesn't matter to me, it did not matter from her, but people will say that she is being careless for not keeping her from the black men. My step mother was more concerned about her reputation because of letting me do unacceptable things. I went back to Beryl to tell her that I could not do it and she told me that she already knew that I was not going to participate and she really understood. She was passionate and understanding in her response, and apart from that, I did not experience any other problem when dancing with Beryl.
Apart from the instance when my stepmother restricted my participation at the carnival everything else with Beryl was fine, and we did dancing together. There was a typical group made by John Humphrey and her sister Dionese who did not like me in the group because I was not responding to John's affection towards me. John was suffering because of this, but I loved him in person, but I was not intimately in love with him. John's love for me destroyed him and further distracted him from his studies and dancing career which made Dionese hate me even more. I was the outsider amongst the group, and we used to meet, and after dancing shangu, we could go back on our own stratified. At some times, there was a cafe on Punjab that sold ice cold coconut water that we used to go to but I never drunk coconut water which made me the outsider in the group. We were good friends, but afterward, everybody went on their own stratified.
I love everything about dancing, and I have always danced because it brings a lot of joy to me and whenever I hear music am ready to go. Beryl was a cool and a thrill, she was fearless and completely sophisticated but had traveled well doing dancing. Beryl had accepted the stratification in the community, and she was never bitter or angry regarding racial bias. Beryl was fearless because she had to beg for everything, she had to beg for everything to keep her place going. Beryl could approach anybody and ask for anything even asked for a lift. Beryl was a powerful woman, and she had an aim of what she wanted to do. Beryl used any kind of material to beautify her place, and she had painted it all black. One day Beryl told me that she was having an event to reward all those that have been there for her. Beryl wanted me to be in her award ceremony, and I went there with Ian whom we seated together with him on a bench. At Beryl's place, strange things were happening, I got quite hysterical and laughed. Beryl gave out awards, it was a crazy episode in my life, and I loved it mainly because Ian was there although I don't remember when we got married. But the time I got married was the end of the dancing episode, I was involved in the shows, and Beryl was also involved, and we did a lot to support her. Beryl had a broad mind, and she had people to support her, and she was also very generous. Her house was painted black, but I believe she could have done more.
Beryl could have painted her house better because black was not my favorite then. Beryl could have improved the background if she had put on different materials and texture. If Beryl had used flat black, shiny black and other variations of color the house background could have looked better. I found Beryl's approach of using a single color all through to paint the house boring. However, I noted that the way she had used different materials made the house a little exciting and I believe that using different dimensions makes a place even more exciting. In my life, I have always been bold to tell people what I think since when I was little but it never occurred to me the audacity of it because I see too much but I don't go about to pick it up on people.
