The paper will take a foundationalist approach. The foundationalism perspective is that every theory requires an explanation to support it, but any rationale also needs to be justified itself. Knowledge rests upon a bedrock of hypothesized knowledge. In the paper, the literature review extensively coves the recent knowledge on the relationship between the United States of America and Iran. The rest of the nations of the world have a better relationship with each other than the association between America and Iran. There is the vast knowledge of the two countries because of the long history they share. Their story goes back to the early days of the cold war. The United States of America used Iran as a gateway to Asia during the height of communism in the Asian continent. Foundationalism will be significant in giving out the explanation of the benefits the United States of America hopes to gain from the sanctions. The literature review may consist of readings from journals, newspaper articles, op-ed and books (Baglione 73)

The positivist epistemology approach is the best to guide the research. This is because positivists only take facts from scientific processes to derive legitimate claims from them. It is the belief of positivists that the earth is external and that all researches have a common objective despite the researcher's belief. Thus, they take structural and a guided approach in carrying out research by having a specific research topic, establishing relevant hypotheses and acquiring an appropriate research methodology. This paper is centered on facts and not values thus this method suits the research. The methodological approach that will apply to this paper is behavioral. This method is scientific in nature. Scientists employ this method to get the objectives of their research and also in explaining the events that take place in the world.

A behavioral method can also be used to explain the conflict between the United States of America and Iran. This strategy is helpful especially when it comes to the collection of data. It's efficient in the collection and analysis of a large amount of data. Behaviorism is keener on measurable information, accurate calculation, observable facts and the collection of data. This method is suitable because it discerns facts from values easily. Facts can be rationalized scientifically but values cannot. Thus in most circumstances, behaviorists prefer facts than values. Another reason why this methodological approach is the best is that it has no place for things such as values and morality. People should note that international relations are more about cooperation and interests rather than mere values. (Jackson, and Sorensen 41)

The qualitative method will be used to test the hypotheses. The reason for this lies with the research question. Qualitative method is relevant in this scenario because there would be no field work to carry out. Most of the literature in this paper can be easily accessed in the library. In this method, an analysis of cases will be the best move. Thus two important cases in the discipline will be studied. The cases of this paper will be based on previous studies in the matter. The collection of data will involve a lot of documentation. Primary sources that will be consulted include international laws, court cases, treaties, and regulations. The secondary sources are textbooks, journals, and scholarly readings.
