Introduction
The business setting in the world is quite competitive, and the aim of all the manufacturing systems is long-term survival. However, the continuation of a firm in a competitive market depends on its capability to generate high-quality products at low costs within the shorts time. These goals should further be attained by paying paramount esteem to the workers who make the system operate effectively. In some cases, the difficulty of achieving the goals is due to the complexity of manufacturing activities. However, it is relevant to note that it is not difficult to develop a high-quality product. Maintaining it is the issue, and an approach referred to as JIT is endorsed for utilization since it helps to attain all the set goals (Kumar, Dev & Jaiswal, 2018). JIT is guided by the principles of smooth production flow, application of the pull-method, storage, and waiting for time reduction and equipment maintenance.
One of the principles of JIT is a smooth flow in production. When products are obtained from suppliers up to the time they will be delivered to consumers; the JIT system has been seen to target at averting inconsistent proportions of production that can lead to interruptions and additional work-in-process accounts. When there is a smooth flow of output, final products will also be of high quality. Another principle of JIT is pull-method. It contributes to the effective production process. With this method, goods are produced in every phase as they are required in the next stage. As such, it ensures a reduction in waiting times and eradicated the work-in-process inventory that usually exists between the production steps. Associated non-value-added costs are also reduced due to the pull-method (Emde, 2017).
Additionally, reduction in storage and waiting time is another doctrine of JIT. The system ensures that materials are bought, and goods produced only when needed, and thus, no stock is built for future utilization. In this way, the need to create space for the storage of materials and products is eased and leads to less time wasted while waiting for enormous amounts of materials and products. There is also the element of maintaining equipment with the JIT system. It needs severe loyalty to repetitive preservation programs. Practical and preventive maintenance of equipment will allow the firm to avoid costly downtime from breakdowns of machines (Khorasani, Cross, Feizi & Islam, 2017).
The basic principles of JIT have been explored and observed to constitute smooth production flow and reduction in waiting periods, and non-value added expenditures. There is also a decline in storage and waiting time and equipment maintenance that saves a company from expensive downtime due to the breakdown of machines.
