Summary of the Passage
The research on ethnicity and race in the United States has been an issue for a long time as most of the people use it to not only separate but also advance racial biases within the diverse community. Although race and ethnic disparity has mainly focused on the social benefits and burdens, it has also become an issue in the healthcare centres as people are treated depending on their races (Thacher, 2004). It is important to note that race and ethnicity affect people in all areas and the main thing used in distinguishing people across the races is income.
Passage Paraphrase
Research concerning disparities on the victimization risk in ethnicity and race is a significant issue which separates the advantaged people from the disadvantaged individuals in the United States. Furthermore, the issue of victimizing people across ethnic groups has brought out an essential interest since the scholars have found out that the individuals of color are highly victimized with crimes as compared to the whites (Thacher, 2004). Broader literature regarding social stratification such as research on health inequality had mainly paid attention to the racial and economic differences on the social benefits and burdens. Due to the fact that such disparities have unique normative importance, it is essential to know if they are increasing. Therefore, the article focused on disparity across the different income groups since income is the utmost direct axis separating advantaged from disadvantaged.
Direct Quote from the Passage
According to Thacher (2004), "Indeed, research about disparities in victimization risk across race and ethnicity-another important axis that separates the advantaged from the disadvantaged in the U.S.-has generated significant interest, as scholars have found that people of color are much more likely to be victimized by crime than whites."
The Best Approach of Incorporating a Source to Use When Translating to a Popular Audience
Although summarizing and quoting are helpful when translating information to a popular audience, I would prefer to use paraphrasing. The reason is that it will give me the chance of expressing significant ideas in my own words which further helps me understand the topic of discussion better and liberates me from the dogma of restricting myself to the author. As compared to making quotations, paraphrasing is more flexible for future use as it will not require me to remember the exact words that were used by the author. Instead, I will use my understanding to explain information or topic to the audience. Also, after understanding a text, it is easier to rephrase it so that it can match the original context.
Paraphrasing approach is the best since it will enable me to reduce the complexity and length of a sentence so that it becomes easy to put the point across to my audience. The reason is that long descriptions might lead to losing or overlooking the individual details. Furthermore, too much detailed information may make the audience lose their focus and even disregard the main issue. Hence, paraphrasing condenses a topic or information without losing many essential points for the popular audience.
I chose to paraphrase since it can blend easily with my ideas and makes information to be more coherent. Another unique thing about paraphrasing is that it develops the impact of an impersonal and academic style. Paraphrasing also makes one be more informed and even comprehend the topic so that the audience can easily understand and give real-life examples.
