As Burson, Moran, and Conrad (2016) point out, through practice-focused doctoral education, students pursuing various nursing programs are able to develop unique clinical knowledge or skill sets and translate them into practice. The formulation of academic and professional goals should also form part of the advanced nursing skill acquisition by a doctor of nursing practice (DNP)-prepared nurse.
I might use the services of the Career Center to help me stay focused on my goals now and throughout my program by using the resources available at the Center to enrich my career, to explore more career opportunities in the nursing profession, and to improve on my resume. Moreover, the next steps I have identified as part of my healthcare planning process include networking with classmates or colleagues and attaining a leadership position in healthcare once I complete my doctoral studies.
This course has played a significant role in helping me develop and confirm my professional pathway by enabling me to understand the requirements of a good leader and to discover the different types of leaders that exist in the workforce today. Additionally, the course has made it possible for me to reflect on myself and single out the type of nurse leader I would like to be in the future. For, according to Burson, Moran, and Conrad (2016), due to the unique competencies that doctoral graduate nurses obtain during their training and education, they are placed in a better position to take on advanced nursing practice roles such as health policy specialists and nurse administrators.
My understanding of the practice doctorate and its applicability to my professional and educational goals is that it teaches one how to use evidence-based practice in improving healthcare outcomes, develops an individual's knowledge base, and prepares them for advanced practice and leadership roles. My areas of interest within my specialization are palliative care, geriatrics, and simulation and my initial idea about my proposed research topic for the Doctoral Capstone Project is the outcome of the end of life care simulation training program as measured by nurses in the nursing home. According to Mehdi et al. (2014), a simulation training program for those who specialize in geriatric medicine enables the trainees to develop relevant skills that they can apply in the care of the elderly. Also, to keep moving forward in the program, I intend to use strategies such as the use of the resource center's smart thinking services to improve writing and seeking support from my professors and colleagues. My secrets to success are always maintaining a positive mindset as I complete each course and constantly reminding myself of how close I am to achieving my goals.
Conclusion
In summary, to be able to take on advanced practice roles in nursing, one has to possess the required skills and knowledge. Forming academic and professional goals and working towards their achievement is also necessary as this prepares one for their future leadership responsibilities as a nurse.
