Introduction
The book "Rivers Remember" by Krupa Ge is an excellent piece because it captures the story of flooding in the southern Indian city of Chennai in 2015. The book also contributes to an exceptional cultural memory that was associated with the December 2015 Chennai flood-a job that it does with barely suppressed rage and deceptive simplicity. The book places the flood bygones of 2015 against the cultural and physical landscape of Chennai, while desperately worrying about the future. Memory is a recurrent theme in the book and helps in addressing various issues that Krupa intends to address. This paper focuses on critically analyses Krupa Ge's "Rivers Remember" based on social relations, governance, the experience of disasters, and practices of the middle class against the poor in the city of Chennai, who is witnessing rapid transformation and economic growth.
The shocking Chennai December 2015 flood is one greatest disaster ever seen in the city of Chennai. In the book, the disaster led to the destruction of property and the loss of many lives. However, attempts by the locals to get safety from the local authorities were awkward due to a large number of waters that scattered every. The main constrain that constrains citizens in their engagement with local city authorities during the disaster is the amount of water scattered everywhere. The rain made navigation hard, and most attempts to calm the situation were met with several drowning. Similarly, during the disaster, the local was not allowed to drink the waters and even use it for any form of domestic purpose. The fishermen rescue was also not allowed to provide a rescue mission for fear of being victims of suffocations and other related complications that can expose them to danger. For instance, Srinivasan affirms that during the tsunami, many people can for their rescue, but when the people engage the local authorities, the operations were reduced. The citizens were also denied access to information about the cause of the flood, as well as the possible measures that could be applied to correct the mess immediately.
The Chennai 2015 disaster was nothing to go by, mainly due to its nature and impact on the lives of many citizens. Krupa, in his book, discusses the quality of the flood ad the effects that it caused on people as well as the possible cause. However, in terms of urban governance and planning practices, various rationales were associated with the purpose of the disaster (Manimaran & Kasirajan, 2020). The intensity of urban floods is always higher amidst prolonged rain due to inferior flood management methods adopted by the government. It is still the role of the government to provide better management strategies for flood management. Every instance of the heavy rainfall that was realized in the city that led to the greatest ever disaster portrays the result laxity among urban development administration and authorities, Krupa in his book, argues that the Chennai 2015 disaster was associated with poor disposal of reliable waste products in drainage lines. It was realized that during the flood, the waters were contaminated, and traced of sewage could be seen. Krupa asserts that such planning practices expose an urban setting to flood incidents because there will be no direct paths that water can flow to the required direction. Additionally, lack of early warning systems about floods exposes people to the risks of drowning as most of them are caught unaware during a torrential downpour. As a result, the government should remain steadfast in its applications of legal measures and planning practices to reduce such flood incidences.
Krupa Ge's "Rivers Remember" discusses the shocking truth about the humanmade flood that was realized in the city of Chennai in an attempt to reveal its natural across all social lives. Through the memory that the author brings back about the three rivers which traverse the city portrays the nature of Chennai. "Rivers Remember" reveals that the city is poorly planned and governed. Through analysis discussion of the sewage wastes and the amount of water that was realized after rains, it is clear that the drainage system of Chennai city is weak. For instance, Krupa, after her study on the disaster, realized that it was caused by built-over lakes and forgotten rivers that came to reclaim their positions back. There is also gross mismanagement of resources by those in power in the city, leading to the social class difference (Manimaran & Kasirajan, 2020). The entire disaster reveals that Chennai city is rotten from the inside, and poor leadership is the leading cause of the rot. However, the heart of the town is based on rich cultures, traditions, and history of people. The rich cultures and history of people, as portrayed by the author signifies that Chennai is an underdeveloped city. The book reveals that the mainstream for the success of the town is based on its leadership.
Urbanism in India and Asia is characterized by an increase in the population in cities. Among Indians, urban centers have good leadership, and a centralized body supervises the activities that are being carried out. The growth of urban centers is mainly even though not skewed and encompasses various factors. In Krupa Ge's book, the author addresses the importance of governance in urban centers and its usefulness to the safety of the environment. The actions and activities depicted in the book reveal that urbanization is associated with a clean and sound environment, a high population, and safety controls. Although the disaster tainted the image of the Chennai city, it shares numerous similarities within Asia and India. For instance, Krupa shows the disregarding nature of urban commons during disasters, which can be applied in evaluating the relationship between one organ of government with another. Similarly, issues that are captured in the story, such as social relations and governance, are standard components of the urban setting in India.
