Introduction

The book "Engaging the Soul of the Youth Culture" by Walt Mueller points out the challenges youth encounter in their life. The book begins with a young man who has issues with holding normal conversations. His whole life is chained to cyberspace, hence the only affection he gets comes from strangers he comes across but not at home. Through this demonstration, Walt Mueller provides gospel-centered ways to confront the myriad issues that the youth face today. This book provides an opportunity for both the young generation and parents to learn how to relate and connect with one another. Moreover, Walt Mueller tends to open up the minds of parents, and the young generation to the culture of the youth, and what the youth are currently undergoing in their lives. Walt points out that the core reason as to why the youth are resorting to violence and other inappropriate behavior is due to lack of good Biblical foundation in their young stages.

The book lays down the principles of cross-cultural communication and points out how they can be applied to the situation encountered by youth today. Walt says that there is a need for paying attention and attending to challenges faced by the youth, to inculcate and connect good morals to them. The book outlines a number of relational faults that are portrayed in regard to the culture of young people. According to Mueller, the relational faults are fundamentalism and syncretism. The author gives warning on the fundamentalist fault in the essence of cocooning from the culture, hence making touch with people you want to influence. Additionally, he cautioned against theological teachings that originate from cooperating with the culture, and, hence losing good gospel and morals. The book also reflects on a gentleman who spent a couple of thoughtful on work at his young stages.

The author also reflected and studied the Bible to help him point out the issues of youth challenges, and, hence its intellectual depth to those issues is evident. Mueller combines ideas together and applies them precisely to the area of young people. However, the book fails to give good answers but gives an opportunity to the reader to reason for the young people they serve. Walt Mueller gives the direction of the modern world and inspiring people to build trust and believe in the potentials of God. The book further accuses the church of failing to adequately minister the young people. The book gives an example of a man who happened to have sat on a young culture panel and had an opportunity of talking to one of a non-Christian young man. He explained how he came across a group of young people as he was going to his office around the church. He later started to wonder in which ways he could reach those young people. However, the non-Christian answered him to get out of his office.

The book attempts to challenge the church for failing to give appropriate direction to the young generation. The book helps people who are working or parenting young people to mold and give the right direction. Walt Mueller gives a good understanding of postmodernism and the challenges of today's youth culture. He encourages the adult to play a vital role in engaging the youth and understanding their culture. As noted, it is imperative for people to meet children wherever they are, and understand where they come from to teach them about God. The understanding of this book also helps people to navigate the troubling terrain of youth worldviews, to help them pass along good news to them.
