Introduction

Rebecca Solnit's City of women is an article that comes across as a statement to clarify the reasons behind the map that she made in concert with Joshua-Jelly Schapiro. Through this article, the author explains the layout of the current New York City. She also takes the reader on a journey through the city, explaining the origins of several of the primary structures in the city and how they came to be named. During the tour, she laments about how the city's best and most significant assets have masculine names, including those which at the very least were an oxymoron "... Hunter College, which although was originally a women's college, has a male name, Thomas Hunter". The writer expresses the need for women to be acknowledged more in the city. I agree with these views. I think that the message the writer is passing in her article is essential; to recognize the enormous role that women have played in the history of the city, and to create an empowering environment for young girls growing in this city.

When I was reading this article, it inspired a great feeling of loss and sadness, but it also invoked a sense of hope for days to come. The sorrow and loss came from reading about great things in history which females contributed in, but they are not acknowledged similarly as men. An example of this phenomenon is when she speaks of Harriet Ross Tubman whose name should have appeared side by side with that of Robert Fulton at Fulton Street, but it is not.

The writer also highlights the fact that many great women made many contributions to New York since time immemorial, but their acknowledgment only started recently. Even with the current appreciation afforded to women, it is only meager and not adequately representing the contribution made by the individuals of the female gender to the apparent greatness of New York City. The writer has attributed this to some form of segregation "American cities by are, their nomenclature mostly white as well as mostly male."

The work that the author of this article has done has however shined a glimmer of hope for the future through both this article and the map which she co-authored. By writing this article, she has brought into light many things that may have been done wrong in the past. She is allowing her readers to appreciate the problem that necessitated her actions in co-authoring the map. Through this article, she may have brought into the light things that may have been done based on the social norm in the days of old, but which are ill nonetheless. She teaches a lesson not only to the female readers but also to the men in a better way in which to approach the future.

In this article, the writer explains how she assisted in coming up with a map which names several unnamed structures in the city after great women. The map also aims at appreciating women who did great things in places where they exerted their influence, which counters every problem that she highlighted in her article. Through the map, she puts an effort to effect a change that she feels is due. She not only complains about a society's evils, but she also does something that is within her capacity to make steps in the desired direction. Through this action, she makes a difference. She inspires even other individuals who are in a position of influence to do things that put things in their correct place.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I concur with the author's feelings in this text, and I feel that it is a step in the right direction...
