Introduction
Promotion from within is a form of internal recruitment through which an organization hires from within the organization employees. The advantage of internal recruitment is that the employer is already aware of the capacity and skills of the candidate and the employee also is aware of the organization operations. In such a scenario, employees can quickly familiarize with the new position and ensure product or services continuity because the employee requires minor orientation. Besides, internal recruitment ensures the continuity of the organization values and decisions which promotes cohesiveness and increases employee's morale. The disadvantages of this approach of recruitment are that it limits the organization diversity of skills which can negatively affect the innovative spirit in the organization due to lack of fresh ideas (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2012). Therefore, the internal recruitment can lead to maintaining the existing status quo within the organization which leads to stagnation.
Advantages and Disadvantages from Recruiting Outside Of the Organization
Recruiting outside the organization is an approach of getting fresh employees for an organization roles other than the existing staff within the company. Hiring outside the organization requires more planning and engagement of new employees to be able to deliver the assigned roles. The external recruitment has benefits to the organization in that it is an opportunity for the organization to expand it skills set and promote the generation of new ideas (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2012). External recruitment enables an organization to target specific skills that the current staff does not have that is required to increase capacity in the organization talents. External recruitment has a disadvantage in that it is more costly due to the cost of advertising for the role and the orientation of the employee to understand their new functions and organization values (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2012). New ideas and approaches of the new employee can undermine the organization by creating conflict with the organization established traditions. Besides, external hiring reduces the employee's motivation because it lowers promotion opportunities.
Situations in Which One Is Preferable Over the Other
Promotion of Innovation
In the cases where the organization wants to promote innovation, fresh ideas are required which makes external recruitment more effective compared to internal hiring. In external recruitment, new employees can bring new ideas and skills which can increase the organization competitive advantage compared to internal hiring where skills and knowledge are maintained.
Improving Employee Morale
In the case where an organization seeks to increase employee morale and reduce turnover, internal recruitment is preferred because it helps to retain employees by promoting employees with more significant potential for new roles.
