A Utopian society is a perfect society where everything is owned communally, and everything is done for the common good of everyone. These societies though are deemed as fantasies as many believe that they are too perfect to exist. People compare them to gazing at the sun arguing that even though the sun is too good, we cannot be able to stare at it. Utopians counter this by claiming that just because we are unable to stare at the sun with our weak eyes, it does not mean that the sun does not exist. It is a fact that the sun exists; therefore even a perfect society can survive, and they do exist throughout the world.

Due to the inequalities in society and greedy of the rich which brings about imbalances in the private sector coupled with the inability of philosophers to offer advice to kings, a state of Utopia was born under King Utopus many years ago. It was on an island well separated from the mainland to prevent contamination from the foreign world these individuals did not want to associate with.

In my Utopian society, the 'Paradise of Bliss' I would start by carrying out widespread campaigns to find likeminded fellows who would be willing to leave all we have had and known since were born. Much like the biblical scriptures where a man and a woman will leave their families to go and start their own but in this context ours would be a society. After getting enough recruits, we would sit down and suggest suitable areas to settle and come up with ways to acquire the land on which to settle. The land has got to be far removed from a city but well accessible at the same time. It must be fertile and suitable for tillage as a society should be self-sustaining and perpetuating. There ought to be a river flowing through the land to act as the source of drinking water and irrigation if need be.

The settlement will be made of a society where everyone is equal and uniformly respected. Everyone is entitled to voice their concerns and be heard regardless of gender, age or any other diversity. It will be a free society where people will be expected to act and express themselves freely as long as they do not hurt anyone by their deeds. People will dress as they wish, be religious or not but at the end of the day will be expected to co-exist and live in harmony.

Laws will be enacted unanimously by the participation of every member. The majority's opinion will be the law, but the minority will also be allowed to come up with regulations to keep the majority in check so that they do not abuse power in their numbers.

There will be equal groupings, and each group will have a representative of their choosing. These various representatives will then have the responsibility of choosing a small council which will be responsible for making decisions for our society. The members of the council will not be necessarily authoritarian but will be selected out of the necessity to maintain the well-being of everyone. People will have the power to change their representative without the intervention of anyone if and whenever they choose to do so. To replace a member of the council, the opinion must come from the majority and then voted for by the representatives of the various groupings.

Division of labor will be the only way to carry out the various activities for the general functioning of our society. People will choose where to work and will be rotated after some time to ensure that some people are not overworked than others by tending to avoid the supposedly hard jobs. The reward for labor will be food and regular supplies to sustain their self. The food will be cooked and served communally in equal portions at a common place. However, due to preferences people will be free to cook whatever they please.

Contact with people from 'outside' will be strongly discouraged but if someone chooses to meet a family member, they will be free to do so. Visitors will be treated as just another person in the settlement and will not have to pay for anything. They will only be allowed to repay us through labor during their time of stay.

The ideas for the Paradise of Bliss are very much similar to the socialist worldview in that everything is communal. From ownership of land, labor and to little things as cooking and eating. Everything is meant to make people happy and live in harmony. There is equality and uniform representation of everyone. Provision of labor is the responsibility of everyone to achieve the goal of self-sustenance.

Conclusion

Though difficult to achieve, through proper planning and dedication a utopian society can be realized. It is well demonstrated by the existence of Twin Oaks in Louisa County. This society has been able to sustain itself for a long time by the willingness of the people to cooperate. That said, it would be difficult to live the comfort of our homes and cities to go live in a rural area where our luxuries and desires are curtailed, but if people are committed and put themselves to the realization of such a society, it would be possible. It would take some time for it to be functional but once the foundations are laid recruits would find it easy to fall in place.
