In general, trust is regarded as a cornerstone in interpersonal relationships but defining trust in sports involves reaching out to a broader sphere outside of its context. From a proper knowledge of individuals and the presence of trust, it has become highlighted by Jowett, & Chaundy, (2004) as an essential component of successful coaching. Trust has been studied diversely in the sporting context and establishing trust by coaches is mostly presented and reviewed in literature through cohesive team activities. Majority of the coaches try to build trustful relations within their teams. Most studies discuss trust between the coach and players as being limited to individual sports, and thus there is not much information about trust in team sports.
There are some studies conducted to investigate the interpersonal relationship in sports from different viewpoints. The available literature identifies that successful coaching is dependent on the concept of trust and knowing the various individuals on a sports team. For instance, Rhind, & Jowett, (2010), discusses the preservation approaches in coach-athlete relationships. There is, however, limited research of methods needed to foster trust in teams in an elite level of coaching. Different coaches agree that trust is the core of all day to day coaching actions. According to Olympiou, Jowett, & Duda, (2008), coaches are involved in offering support to their players on and off the field and getting to know them personally. In addition to engaging them in various ways and encouraging them to see mistakes as part of the process of learning.
The other studies in team sports like football and the international research literature concentrates mainly on coaching behavior and coaching principles to a general level for example, on group forming and cohesion (Carron, Colman, Wheeler, & Stevens, 2012). The coach-athlete relationship is said to be among the most critical bonds when playing sports and it has the potential to boost an athlete's self-confidence and their performance levels (Cote, Young, North, & Duffy, 2007). Coaches who take a holistic approach might find better performance as a team and in the player's individual lives. Relationships are customarily glued to each other by trust and coaches who desire strong relationships with their athletes need to win the collective team trust (Rangeon, Gilbert, & Bruner, 2012). If a coach communicates clearly, shows genuine interest and gives reinforcement the outcome will most likely be a real relationship.
