A vehicle refers to a form of transport used to move people or goods from one point in space to another. Currently, there are several types of vehicles, depending on various categories. As a result, the broadest categorization of vehicles classifies them based on the element that provides support.
LAND VEHICLES
Land vehicles consist of forms of transport whose support is provided by land. These machines can further be categorized depending on what they use to move.
Wheeled Vehicles - They are types of vehicles that depend on a wheel to create motion. Examples of wheeled vehicles include buses, lorries, cars, bicycles, skateboards, and motorbikes.
Tracked - These types of vehicles run on a modified form of wheel surrounded by continuous bands of treads or track plates. These vehicles are designed for untarmacked or unpaved surfaces because they spread the weight of the vehicle within a large surface area, which reduces pressure on the ground. Examples include constructions and military vehicles such as excavators and tanks, respectively.
Skied - These types of vehicles are made using a narrow strip of material designed to glide over snow or sand. They are mostly used as sports and recreational equipment.
Railed - These types of land vehicles are wheeled vehicles that run on continuous rails placed in pairs to form a track.
Cabled - These types of vehicles are categorized as land vehicles because it gains its support from the land through the cables attached to support structures on both ends of the wire. Examples include cable cars. The aerial cable car should not be confused with railway cable cars.
WATERCRAFT
These types of vehicles get their support from water. Examples include boats, ships, submarines, and floats such as log craft. These categories of vehicles can further be categorized based on their mode of propulsion.
AIRCRAFT
These are the types of vehicles that are supported by air currents. These types of vehicles overcome gravitational pull using a dynamic, static, or powered lift. Examples include fighter jets, passenger planes, helicopters, balloons, and airships.
SPACECRAFT
These are the types of vehicles designed for space travel. These types of vehicles don't get support from any form of element because their travel environment is a vacuum. As a result, they move and maneuver using a propulsion system such as rocket propellant. Examples of these vehicles include the space shuttle and the international space shuttle. These types of vehicles can further be categorized based on their ability to sustain humans.
Crewed - These are the types of space vehicles that are designed to support human life. That includes features such as pressurization and temperature control. The international space station is an example.
Uncrewed - These types of spacecraft are designed for robotic space missions. They can be autonomous, remote-controlled, or both. They are also not designed to support human life and are usually smaller in size when compared to crewed space crafts.
AMPHIBIOUS
The amphibious vehicles are those means of transport that can derive their support from both land and sea. These types of vehicles are sometimes utilized by military units for amphibious attacks. Hovercraft is an excellent example of an amphibious vehicle because it is capable of traveling over various surfaces of land and sea. Landing crafts and ground effect vehicles (GEVs) don't qualify as amphibious vehicles because they lack sustained transport over land and cannot be controlled while being operated on land.
