Media careers are one of the most attractive jobs across jobs with a high number of people it attracts. Media jobs span from the traditional outlets, television, and radio, to the digital media careers which involves the all the media works done over online such as online marketing and the e-book editing (Couldry, 2012). There have been numerous trends in the media jobs with the advance of the technology compelling the employees to match their pace with the trends that are encroaching at supersonic speed. This has created a demand for some products and services; whereas on the other hand causing a decreased demand for some. A good example is on the newspaper whereby there have trends of the migration from the traditional way of printed booklets with news to the eBooks containing the same quantified information. This essay aims at comparing and contrasting the Digital Media Jobs to the Traditional Media Jobs.
The digital media jobs require know-how and familiarity with some specific programs. This explains the preciseness in being a technology informed person as described in the work requirements. In comparison to the traditional media jobs where one would require the necessary skills since most of the work is done manually, the digital media requires some expert knowledge in programs and the web platforms like the HTML and Java. As a result, digital media jobs are paid more than the traditional media jobs because of their level of expertise. Additionally, digital media jobs require more skills; therefore, more information is provided at the learning and training process (Moody2010, pp.6). For instance, a website designer and media planner would require more skills and knowledge in contrast to a news editor and anchor who needs good communication skill and preventability.
Traditional media jobs are more tedious and require more labor supply compared to the digital media jobs. Let's consider the case of magazines, newspaper, and radio broadcasting CDs and books. The necessary steps that involve the process of writing, typing, editing the work and printing of the documents will require a lot of people to create the labor force. You would agree that the most work would involve the distribution of the newspaper and magazines to the required destination. On the other hand, the digital media job of the same would involve the typing and editing of the same document and distribute to the various media platforms such as the internet like Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp in the form of PDF's file (Howard &Muzammil 2011, pp.39).
Traditional media creates more jobs more than digital media. This is through the many personnel required throughout the process. The jobs created by the traditional media would include the people involved in the gathering and collection of data, compilation, editing of the information, anchoring and presentation of the news for the case of the television and radio, and printing and distribution of the press for newspaper and magazines case. This has to engage journalist, editors, and reporters to ensure the correct information is passed to the consumers. In contrast to this, the digital media reduces the required labor force through the application of modern technology in the collection and gathering of information such as the internet and other digital media platforms. One person can do the distribution to the target group by supplying the recorded clip and the edited news through the social media platforms. On view from the employer's perspective, the cost of production in regards to labor is much cheaper on the digital media compared to the traditional media.
The digital media jobs are mainly founded on traditional media jobs. It is clear that digital media jobs have evolved over a period with the improvement of the services that are meant to satisfy the needs of the generations raised in the advanced technology era. The main reason that can be attributed to the digital media is the success in the traditional press; therefore the advances in technology have had the upper hand. In most digital media jobs, it is noticeable in most job requirements in the career descriptions that the employee must meet most of the traditional media job descriptions. This further proves that the conventional media job requirements act as the prerequisites to the digital media job.
However, both traditional media jobs and the digital media jobs serve to a common objective. Their main aim to is to pass information to the target consumers (Manovich, Roger and Sean 2001). It is an issue of less concern to some people on the mode or means of accessing the information and the global trends, therefore making both jobs important. As said, one man's meat is another man's poison; therefore what a consumer may prefer may be an absolute opposite to the other person, which further explains the role of both media platforms in passing the news and information. Therefore, both media platforms serve a target audience that is similar, whether it is through the broadcast means, in print form or online. Their main idea to is to communicate a specific message to the mass, which is achieved through their different platforms.
