In the story "A Doctor's Visit" by Korolyov, a doctor who is from Moscow comes from a small factory city with the aim of looking at an ill heiress. The story describes that there is usually a difference that exists between the appearance and the reality. The doctor rides into the town having extreme irritation and prejudice. He views peasant class employees as being significantly affected by drunkenness, and they are leading pointless lives. Korolyov has developed hatred against the owners of the factory, and he criticizes the haphazard and senseless luxury that is contained in it. When he meets with the ailing heiress, he views her as being ugly just like her mother. This proves that Korolyov is a terrible man who only is after being paid because of carrying out diagnosis and immediately leave town. This paper will assess how it is easy for ignorant, egotistical and pretentious individuals to pretend that they are caring for others whereas they are focusing only on benefiting themselves. Additionally, the dissociation existing between the inherited wealth and earned wealth will be described.
After Korolyov, the acting professor's assistant, enter the town, the first of all notices the town scenery. He gets charmed with the villas, farmhouses and the factory while on the road. However, Korolyov could not believe that the ailing daughter was the heiress of five huge buildings as he makes the first impression of her as being an imperfect creature cared for by charity (Chekhov and Matlaw 18). The doctor finds out that there is nothing wrong with Liza except that she was experiencing fast heartbeats and her sleep was disturbed after diagnosing her for the first time (Chekhov 12). In the following morning, Liza, the ailing heiress, explains to the doctor that she had worries regarding building in the vague terms as she was not able to name it since she was mostly concerned about everything that surrounds her. It turns out as if the doctor required only to visits a different town for him to break all his prejudices down.
The doctor's walk through the village in the night was like visiting apocalyptic hell. After the doctor shows the complete misery of the poor and the rich in the town, he developed the belief that there was only one individual who was benefiting from the industry in the city. The doctor did not doubt that all the employees of the factory were living miserable lives characterized by drunkenness and fighting (Chekhov 23). However, this may not seem right as the workers may be having some intelligence as well as having the possibility of having elitism sense. It is ironical that even after Liza decided to explain to the doctor what was going on in her life did not see reason in it. Instead, the doctor could only see that Liza was just worried by her single status which made it impossible for her to rest easy since she would inherit and become responsible. This is why the doctor gives Liza advice that she needed to travel to forget about the factory. Although Liza was put in a high position of being factory owner, she was still dissatisfied (Coulehan 22). This proves that the wealthy heiress did not believe that she had the right to be in her position.
The effects are that the heiress perceives herself as not being worthy enough to inherit the factory and she is mainly because she would be unable to operate it effectively which would ruin it. This worry that Liza is having may be attributed to nothing as she has not been in the required position to start operating the company's activities hence it is just like an example of the self-fulfilling prophecy. Liza has a strong belief in herself as being incompetent, and this is why she has not acquired her position (Chekhov 24). This means that Liza will only end up becoming incompetent since she cannot perceive herself as being otherwise. Consequently, Liza's worry will contribute to her failing in the future. It is right to assert that the doctor is right when he assumes that given that Liza was having a sound sleep with no worries it could have resulted to making her as a person without qualms concerning the entitled position in the future. Liza needed to have no reason for worrying about the manner she would manage the business in the future.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the story "A Doctor's Visit" by Korolyov, articulates two significant issues; the dissociation is existing between the inherited wealth and earned wealth, and it shows the difference between appearance and reality. It is like the doctor visited a different region only to benefit himself. The initial medical assessment of the doctor about heiress illness was a sign of patronizing reflection. It is until when Liza started crying that the doctor began expressing signs of compassion whereby he diagnosed her and told her that she was fine. This proves that the doctor was only after benefiting from the money he was being paid as a doctor but not helping the heiress. The wealthy people such as Liza did not believe that they had the right to be in their positions.
