Introduction

In the modern day, accidents have become very common, mainly due to the emergence of fast cars. Some accidents are minor and unnoticeable while others are severe and unavoidable. An accident is an undesirable incident that could otherwise be prevented if some circumstances that lead to it were recognized and corrected before it happened (Baviskar, 1995). When an accident takes place due to people speeding, it could be dire and alarming. Due to this, it is essential for people to be careful on the roads and other public places to avoid causing harm to oneself as well as others.

A Fateful Encounter

The other day as I was walking on the footpath from school lost in my thoughts about school and the tests, I heard screeching sound that broke my train of thoughts. I looked at the direction of the sound and what met my eyes will always be a memory I will never forget. A speeding Jeep had hit a young boy, and he was lying in a pool of blood. The Jeep driver was speeding, and after realizing that he had hit the boy, he tried to escape but was caught before going far by the assembled crowd. People gathered around the boy; I also went to check who it was, the sight of the blood was scary. He was between 11-12 years, and he was going home from school.

Addressing the Immediate Crisis

Realizing what had occurred, I grabbed my phone and called the nearest hospital as well as police. A second person searched through his bag where they discovered an address book of sorts which included his contact details. The man informed the family of the boy about the accident. Within moments, another man had called an ambulance from a nearby hospital and brought it quickly to administer first aid to a young boy with broken legs, ribs and head injuries; due to being unconscious it was difficult to assess their severity. There was a dreaded pool of blood left behind.

On the other hand, the Jeep driver was apologizing frantically; he was drunk and the fact that he tried to escape made the crowd hungrier. The people fell on him and taught him a lesson; he was lucky that the police arrived on time to save him from the crowd that would have ended his life. The police took the driver together with his car for further investigations. Some of the witnesses were requested by the police to accompany them to testify about the occurrence of the accident. The Jeep driver was totally drunk, this impaired his judgement and this was the reason he was driving carelessly. The boy was on the right side riding his bicycle; the driver came from behind and overran him.

Conclusion

Most accidents today can be prevented. Common factors including speeding, not obeying traffic lights and drug abuse as factors of road accidents; distractions to drivers; not using safety belts or helmets to stay safe when driving and overtaking carelessly (Baviskar 1995). People should be well educated about road safety, and those breaking the set rules to be held fully accountable. Engineers should also help in designing roads that are safe and easy to navigate. If all the set rules are followed, the number of accidents will surely go down.
