Introduction
Researchers use literature to understand more of a current debate and research outcome of a particular case study or topic and to present that same knowledge in writing for reference. Therefore the importance of preparing a literature review is to help a researcher build prerequisite knowledge on what they intend to conduct research. Elsewhere, the problem statement does not solve any research problem. Still, it is an essential part of the literature review section because it introduces readers to the importance of the study topic. This response essay seeks to evaluate the use of literature and research problems by Peter R. Ibarra and co-authors in their case study of supervising domestic violence defendants with GPS technology. Besides, it explains the meaning of justifying and grounding a research study in literature.
Ibarra and co-authors use literature to expound on the state of Evaluation Monitoring tool used in managing risks posed by offenders conditionally released. These offenders include domestic violence perpetrators. Additionally, as the purpose of the literature suggests, the authors draw their references from reports of discussions of the style of supervision from the probation context and parole from Glaser's journal (Ibarra, 2014). Further, they confirm from this previous study that the two concepts historically concentrated on the level to which an officer gets orientation towards law enforcement. The literature also confirms the scholarly work of Klorkas that speaks about the style of service provision by the probation officers. , the novel integrates different research outcomes to diversify the scope of the study. From linking evaluation monitoring to perpetrators of domestic violence and officers surveying these perpetrators and law enforcement framework gives a better outcome of the study.
The study, therefore, seeks to identify the progress and effects of the surveillance on the domestic violence perpetrators and link to law enforcement procedures with the United States. From the critical analysis of scholarly work by research like Foucault, Feeley, Simon, Garland, and Deleuze, the researchers identified three related sets of discourses to the surveillance. The interconnection between managerial-surveillant, humanistic-rehabilitative, and punitive-repressive creates the interactive surveillance problem statement that the authors used (Ibarra, 2014). The study wants to find out how active and interactive surveillance is by finding out how the three discourses correspond with and ground to the distinctive emphases and practices. The interrelationship between interactive monitoring and correspondence with and grounding to the discussions creates the statement problem for the study by Ibarra and co-authors.
Justifying and Grounding Research Study in Literature
Literature is essential in the current research work because when a scholar gets interested in investigating a particular scenario, they want to get to know what happened before. Therefore, a successful literature review should be the current state of research on the intended topic based on previous scholarly work. It should also identify experts who previously worked on the proposed topic, if any, while pointing out critical questions about a problem calling for further research. Lastly, useful study literature should determine research methodologies used in past studies of similar nature or matter to ease the choice of the current methods.
A research problem being a clear expression about a specific area of concern needs to be original to create the impression that it is scholars' work but not borrowed efforts. It has to be innovative because it does not give guidelines on how to do something or offer a value question but introduces the reader to the importance of the study topic. Furthermore, its originality places the text into a context suggesting the researchers' efforts, and it provides a professional framework for reporting the results.
Conclusion
A literature review and problem statement must be part of the research work for it to be complete. As earlier stated, Ibarra uses various scholarly works to create an interactive surveillance study that incorporates three discourses towards surveying and handling domestic violence. The Ibarra and co-authors research article proves the reason why research work must have a literature justification and ground. Furthermore, it reiterates the reason why problem statements must be original to create uniqueness in a study for the interest of the information users.
