Introduction
The quiet torrential sound is a short play about two sisters. The two sisters Monica and Claire visit a cafe after attending a classical concert. While at the cafe, Monica orders decaffeinated coffee while Claire orders a coke and a hot fudge sundae. However, Monica goes ahead to remind Claire of her size and she needed to put it on the check. This leads to Claire changing her order to a diet coke only. The two girls sat in the cafe discussing their experiences from the concert. Monica did not seem to have been pleased by the concert they had just attended and she was constantly lamenting about it. She also complains to the waiter that she had not brought decaffeinated coffee and it would cause her headaches later. The waiter therefore offers to exchange her order with regular coffee. Monica viewed this act as being ingenuine about their services. She was not happy with the services. For the period the girls stayed within the cafe they both talked about different subjects but kept shutting each other off. It was an indication of how they had not been in good moods with each other after the concert. At some point, Claire was discontented hat Monica was not paying attention to her stories about her personal life. Gradually, they both decided to go out of the cafe and head home. However, after the many lamentations and lashing the waiter, Monica still left a $10 tip on her table as she was leaving.
Characters
Monica
Monica is the elder of the two sisters. From the play, she is described as an individual who is talkative and always ready to criticize any subject that does not appeal to her. While at the cafe she criticized the behavior of the waiter not serving her with the order she had asked for. She had initially requested that she should e served with decaffeinated coffee. However, when the waiter fails to bring decaffeinated coffee she complains and views her as not being honest. She instead insists on her order being exchanged with regular coffee since she did not want to experience headaches later on after consuming the caffeinated coffee. She is an intellectual and understand most of the things that happen around her. When she attended the classic concert, sh was ot impressed by the performances and she openly critics them while at the cafe. This is an indication that she could not hold anything that bothered her. However, she approached every situation intellectually and boasted of her highbrown exploits.
Claire
She is the younger of the two sisters. Her character is quiet and she is rarely heard airing her opinions. While at the cafe she tried to talk to Monica her elder sister about her experiences after attending a sex workshop. However, Monica could not listen to her and kept talking her over. She was infuriated by the fact that even her sister did not give attention to whatever she had to say to express herself. Instead, Monica was self-centered and only cared about her emotions and feelings. Claire is a likeable character due to her self-confidence and quiet nature. She is not rowdy and is a good communicator despite her sister Monica not giving her attention when she needed it.
The waiter
The waiter is depicted as being unenthusiastic and has little time to listen to Monica boasting and complaining. She is likeable because she gives time to everyone who is in eth cafe. This character is not bothered by the lashing that she gets from Monica when she delivers caffeinated coffee.
Themes
Criticism
Criticism is the main theme of the play. When the two girls enter the cafe, they start criticizing the concert they had just attended. Their criticism was centered on the concert not being satisfactory to them. Monica was more centered on criticizing eth concern and did not see any positive thing about it. Also, Monica criticizes the poor waiter serving them and the coffee that was served to her. She did not also spare her sister Monica and started to criticize her initially when she orders coke and fudge sundae.
Personal discovery
When the two sisters were in the cafe, Claire clearly states that he had started discovering her body since she had been experiencing orgasms. However, Monica who majored on criticizing did not pay attention to what Claire was saying. She missed out the important details of her younger sister's new experiences which later infuriates Claire.
Subtle humor
The play is short but can humor can clearly be identified within. The two sisters had come to the cafe to connect with each other from the classic concert. However, they did not connect and Monica ended up criticizing her sister in the long run. While Monica complains about things happening around her, Claire focuses on discussing the discovery about her life. The meeting is a train wreck for the two sisters but is humorous to the readers and the audience.
